The PicoSpice is flowing!
In the video above you can hear two more ambient and two more lo-fi inspired tracks. What should I name these!?
I'm REALLY enjoying composing these ambient tracks. When we speak about ambience, it's often in relation to "randomized" sounds in nature and other spaces. In Pico-8, sometimes I feel like creating a perfectly balanced, polished machine. I'm trying to compose parts that interact in interesting and unpredictable ways, hence all the varying SPD values.
But these compositions aren't static; there's pacing and development. For that, I take a lot of inspiration from the idea of music as a "gradual process." The idea was coined by Steve Reich in an essay he wrote in 1968. That wiki link gives a good breakdown of different kinds of processes found in music.
To be honest, I'm not enjoying composing this lo-fi inspired music as much. There's been a bit more resistance in this area. This is probably from a combination of Pico-8's capabilities and me trying to demand too much from it. Writing "jazzy" like progressions, melodies, and grooves is very easy for me, and Pico-8 is a bit too slow in capturing my ideas. So it's been more of a grind. We'll see how it goes over the next couple weeks.
More coming soon!
