Composing with Filters (Part 2) – Pico-8 Music Tutorial #67

In this tutorial, I continue exploring open/ambient music and using the filters to give more depth.

I wasn’t totally happy with the direction the previous tutorial took, and I wanted to try again. So, in THIS tutorial, I go a bit deeper into designing the custom instruments. One approach I like to take when composing ambient music is creating parts that interact in unpredictable ways. Using various SPDs and loop points helps with this.

These two tutorials are meant to show process and flow. They’re not necessarily instructive. So, if you don’t know how custom instruments or filters work, I’d recommend watching previous tutorials before checking these out.

I’d like to produce at least two more tutorials on the topic of filters.  The first is using reverb as an added effect with echos.  I’m interested to hear if it helps create “space.”  The other is using filters to create deeper, dirtier and buzzer bass sounds.  Should be fun!
