How to Make Sounds with the Sample Editor - Getting Started with Chiptunes and MilkyTracker (2/4)

- Generate sounds using the sample editor
- Adjust a sample’s volume
- Apply fades to samples
- Loop samples
- Input notes using the keyboard
When creating a sample that’s being used for melody or harmony, I recommend it being 64 samples long, or a multiple of 64. Otherwise, the sample won’t be in tune. It’s possible to tune samples in MilkyTracker, but that’s best left for an intermediate tutorial!
As I mention, there are advantages and disadvantages to creating volume fades in the sample. The biggest disadvantage is that sample playback speed is determined by the note. Higher notes = faster sample playback, lower notes = slower sample playback. This means the length of your notes will be directly related to its pitch.

- ESC: Stop playback
- Space: Trigger record mode
- Enter: Playback
- F1-F7: changes note-input rage
- Command+Option+S: sample editor
- Z: input note ‘C’
- Q: input note ‘C’ + one octave
