some important patreon updates!

i'm making some changes to my patreon page! here's a quick look at what's going on followed by a more detailed FAQ for some further explanation :)

1. i'm switching from charging per thing to charging per month!

2. your original pledge amount will remain the same, but now you'll only be charged once a month instead of every time i post a new song. (so unless you had a monthly limit in place, you'll now be charged half what you used to in a given month.)

3. if you'd like to make sure your total monthly pledge continues at the same level, you can adjust it here or switch to a higher tier here.

4. i'm paring down the tiers and making hangouts and song downloads accessible to all members!

okay, on to the explanations!

KINA! why are you doing this?

well for starters, i've been realizing that kg records is about much more than "two things a month". it’s about the community we’ve created. it's about having a safe and trusted space where we can share and feel and have monthly therapy sessions. a space safe enough for even unreleased demos! it’s about having a direct relationship with the humans who support my music, and getting to both know and praise them as much as possible. it's about creating a new paradigm, where instead of needing to rely on a big record label who wants to control when and how and what i create, my record label gets to consist of the very humans who most appreciate and understand what i make!

wow okay! that was very passionate! any other reasons?

why yes! another big reason is that charging "per thing" was confusing to a lot of people. "per thing" raises all sorts of questions--what is a thing? how often do i post a thing? it also runs the risk of people accidentally pledging more than they planned because they didn't realize there would be two things a month. monthly is so much simpler.

makes sense. anything else?

as a matter of fact, yes. i want to create the best art possible for you, and i really believe that not having the constraint of needing to hit “two things” each month will allow me to make each thing the best i possibly can, instead of rushing to get it out in time. as many of you know, jesse and i have been going through IVF/infertility for a while now, and it's been incredibly taxing emotionally and creatively. i want to make sure i never get to a place where i'm either sacrificing 1. the music or 2. my mental health in order to hit that "two things per month" goal during a time when i'm just not able to create at the same pace i used to. going to monthly will allow the music to come at its own pace and allow me to preserve my sanity so i can keep making music for a long, long time :)

how does this affect my pledge?

your pledge amount is unaffected by this change--all of my current patrons are grandfathered in to the old tiers--you can stay exactly where you are and keep getting the same stuff you've been getting (or in some cases, more stuff). the only real difference here is that since i'm now charging per month instead of per THING, those of you who did not have a monthly limit set will actually be getting charged half of what you used to (since i posted 2 "things" a month). in the event you would like to keep pledging the same amount you were before, you can either adjust your membership tier to a higher one, or simply adjust the amount pledged per month here.

why are you paring down the tiers?

I WANT ALL MEMBERS TO HAVE ALL THE THINGS! (or most of the things, at least!) i took all the things that felt the most important to me--like access to our community discord chat server, unreleased demos, song downloads, and my personal favorite, our monthly online hangouts--and i lumped them all into a new base level. you are ALL my community, but it's felt like only the people who had the ability to join our hangouts had the option to really know and feel a part of the community if they wanted to. these hangouts have been so beautiful and emotional and important to me, and it feels like a part of kg records that i want to make sure all of you have access to.

what if my tier no longer exists?

if you are currently on one of the lower tiers that no longer exist (i see you, hummingbirds and geckos!), have no fear! you are grandfathered in at that level, and you'll now get everything people at the $5 level get because i love you so darn much. while your tier is no longer listed on the front page for new patrons to join, it still exists behind the scenes so you won't be affected by this change.

it looks like my tier's amount was raised, please explain!

a note to whalesharks and unicorns: the pledge amounts you see listed on the new tiers do not apply to you--you are still on the original version of the tier (which has been unlisted so it's no longer visible on my page). now that we're on a monthly system instead of per thing, you will actually be charged half as much as you used to be (unless you had set a monthly limit--then you'll be charged the same amount). the reason the new pledge amounts look higher in both cases is so when new patrons join at this level, the monthly pledge is closer to what patrons were paying when i charged per thing. if you had no max before and feel moved to keep pledging what you used to, you can either adjust your pledge amount or switch to the updated version of the tier.

how do i get my kg fox pin and/or signed photo?

goooood question! i'm working on a way to have all this spelled out super simply for each level, so please stand by and thank you so much for your patience! but basically you will have the ability to opt-in and have them mailed to you. these perks will not be automatically mailed out to all members, because not everyone wants them, and the last thing i want to do is create more trash in the world ;)

any parting words for us?

i've said it once and i'll say it a million times: simply having the honor of getting my music in your ears is the biggest gift of all. i love this community, i love getting to know you and having you all as a safe space to share exclusive stuff with, i love the fact that real live human beings who understand my music are my record label, but if it is ever a stretch for you to be part of kg records, for heaven's sake, delete your pledge! my music will always be free on youtube and distributed to any and all music services. my rambling thoughts will be posted to instagram and facebook. i'm around. and i will love and appreciate you all the same. if the only way you can get my music is to steal it, steal it! my music is meant to be with whomever needs it and i don't want anything getting in the way of anyone getting it.
