Lover Man

This piece is a renowned jazz ballad from the 40’s. Lover Man is a composition originally written for Billie Holiday, who later recorded it, but many other musicians such as Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck, Barbra Streisand, Blossom Dearie, Yusef Lateef gave their contribution to its popularity with their interpretations.

The story goes that Charlie Parker recorded this composition totally intoxicated, but as it happens, his jazz version is truly impressive and widely appreciated.

The basic tonality of this guitar arrangement is C major. The ballad goes through numerous harmonic changes but always ends in C major. In the B part we have IIm7-V7-Imaj7 in D major and then the same progression in C major. Also two very characteristic bars that have a blues undertone are C7#9 which leads to F7. I repeated these two bars 3 times in the last A part and added a little extra blues improvisation to raise the tension a bit towards the end.
