Kina Diaries: We found a song!

Hey friends!

I wanted to share with you a fun little tidbit from yesterday morning :)

Jesse and I were sitting across from each other on our couches, sipping our tea, doing some reading, when Jesse asked me, "Have you ever written a guitar riff in your head?" to which I answered "I'm not sure I've ever written a guitar riff."

A quick aside on guitar riffs for anyone who's unfamiliar--Jesse was reffering to a line of melody that gets played out in the guitar part (a good example of one is his song "Wherever You Go" http://spoti.fi/2mLOZWn) vs a guitar part that is simply strummed of finger picked in a more common fashion. ANYWAY.

Perhaps it was an exaggeration that I've never written a guitar riff, but I do tend to write less involved guitar parts. In any case, Jesse challenged me to attempt to write a guitar riff in my head. I sat for a minute or two testing out different melodic lines in my head, and then settled on one I thought was kind of nice. I sang it out loud to Jesse, who then picked up the guitar and started playing it. It was actually really lovely! I gave myself a little pat on the back.

Jesse kept playing the the guitar part, and within a few minutes we were both humming along. A few minutes later we hummed another part. A few minutes after that we hummed a bridge, and then we kind of came-to and realized we had just co-written a song. !!! This is big news, because, while we definitely weigh in on each others songs all the time, we haven't actually written an entire song together since "I Knew This Would Be Love," some 8 or so years ago, so this was a momentous occasion!

So, that's my story. The song doesn't have a name yet, but it's really really lovely, and feels like mornings, and I think we'll make a duet out of it. Still working on the lyrics, but it's shaping up quiet nicely. :)

While I'm here, I might as well let you know that I'm releasing a new video tomorrow! It's a cover of a song released in the late 90s by a male-led band. Any guesses?

Hope you're all well and thanks for being awesome <3

Is the song "borned" yet?

This sounds like it was a fun thing to do together! Looking forward to your finished product :-D

Wow this is so cool! It's crazy because just a week ago I was asking you if you ever wrote a song together (except "I knew this would be love") and now you have!! I can't wait to hear it ❤

thank you for this lovely story! it's amazing to think of what can come together to create a song! not sure what your cover song might be, though.

That is so exciting! "I Knew This Would Be Love" is one of my favorites.

It's so cool that you guys have this kind of a relationship where you can just organically collaborate without any pressure. I can't wait to hear what came out of it! 😁 For me, you'd be surprised how many guitar riffs I've written in my head in the shower 😂 No idea why...maybe I just think more clearly in there? 😉 As for the cover song, a male-led 90's band could be so many bands. I know what I wish it is though - Creep by Radiohead. I don't always play covers, but when I do, I play that one, Skinny Love by Bob Iver, or Hallelujah (my version of the Jeff Buckley version 😉)...and yes, I'm making a spoof on the Dos Equis commercials - best ad campaign ever 😂 You know, you'd probably also sound amazing singing another Radiohead tune from that era - High and Dry. I think your musical sensibilities would really enjoy Fade Out off the same album, but its kind of pensive and the guitar part is abit of a pain in the rear to keep going whilst you sing 😝 Anyway, now I'm rambling...thanks for sharing as always, Kina. Hope you guys have a lovely day ☺

Riffs require picking. Every time I try one, someone says: "Maybe it'll heal if you quit picking it!" Sigh.

I was just wondering recently if you'd ever found a song without words, can't wait to hear it in whatever form it takes! :D As for the cover I'm gonna go with Creed - Higher, because it has guitar riffs a-plenty.
