Need ideas for good uses of Patreon funds!

Hello community @gamedevsam here!

It's certainly been a very long time since you last heard from me. To be honest, I haven't been very involved in the game dev community lately. I switched jobs away from game dev and into tech (for a better salary & work life balance), but it doesn't mean I lost my love for game dev, and for HaxeFlixel in particular.

While I've been somewhat absent, I still take my role as HaxeFlixel Treasurer seriously, and am looking for ideas on how to deploy our hoard of cash to improve the tech and the community around it.

We're currently sitting on top of $1600 in the Patreon vault, that's a good chunk of cash that can make a difference if deployed correctly.

I'm looking for suggestions on how to deploy this capital to improve HaxeFlixel and the community around it. Please leave your suggestions as comments on this post, I will review each of them and make a decision at my discretion.

If you'd rather make a private suggestion feel free to send me a message on Patreon. Keep in mind all transactions involving Patreon funds will eventually be in the public domain since I publish transaction records on Github.

Thank you in advance, long live HaxeFlixel!

Ham when I wrote that message I was full of ideas but now I've almost forgotten all of them πŸ˜… I will try and do some more research and come up with a more detailed plan in the future but for now I can throw in a few points. 1) It would be good to come up with a little purpose statement as something to aim for, somewhere we want the product to be or where we see the product going, 2) I don't know if there is any analytics on the HF site but it would be good to get some more information about the people who visit it, build a persona/mindset and tailor the site to the purpose statement. If we don't have any analytics I'd recommend looking into a privacy friendly one like Plausible. It costs Β£9 a month. 3) Aim to put out one blog post a month on the HF site, news, tutorials, etc. I don't know what costs would be involved in that if any but if we have regular content we can share on the socials that would definitely be good for SEO 4) Consider Linkedin? This is super optional but I know that Godot and Defold are both on there. This would get more eyes on the product and we could pretty much just share links to the monthly posts we write This is super rough but with the money we have hiring a comms & marketing manager would be a bit too much, however, I think this is a good start and hopefully we can get more patrons in the future and do more things. The points I raised aren't set in stone and we don't have to do any of them at all they're just suggestions. I'm also happy to have a conversation and tweak some of the things if people think their not suitable for the product.

Hey Richard, can you share more about your ideas on how we could market the engine and give me an idea of the costs / benefits as you see them? PS: Thank you for supporting the HaxeFlixel Patreon experiment!

So I have two ideas for the ways the funds could be spent. 1 - As prize money for the next HaxeFlixel Jam πŸ’Έ 2 - It could go towards marketing. HF is a great engine but not a lot of people know about it. I'm happy to elaborate on specific marketing techniques I think would be appropriate for a game engine but I'm not an expert. Thanks for being honest and open about the funds btw :)
