What you saw is the red and green energies inside the mask that are "free" and no longer trapped inside a mold

The mask or at least these 2 masks are just a magical shell/prison for 2 powerful magical entities, meaning they were trapped inside the mask. The evil mask actually works very different, it is actually the mask herself, there is no powerful entity inside a shell. There will be a lore reason at some point that will explain all of this
