Do You Prefer BTS to Sing/Rap in the Korean Language or The English Language?

Whatcher FAM

People often ask BTS (mostly in interviews) if they will ever release an album in English. As if they need to release an album in English in order to reach english speakers or the western world.

I gave my thoughts on this matter in our latest Spring Day Reaction but I want to hear your thoughts.

Do You Prefer BTS singing/rapping in their native language of Korean? Or would you prefer them to make an album in English? Or do you feel this is a non issue?

- NICO

BTS should keep singing in their native language. I love hearing them sing in Korean, even in Japanese. Music shouldn't be restricted to English only just because "we" as in the Western World feels more comfy with it. How come Western artists/ industry always speak of music as an universal language but as soon sth is sung in a different language, they ask for English versions? If music is universal, then don't request it to be English only. Each language and culture adds their own beauty to music. If you listen carefully and let the melody speak to you, you can understand/ feel what the artist is trying to convey. I prefer different genres and like listening to music in different languages. It is a good way of learning about other cultures as well. I've always been into Asian cultures and BTS sparked my interest a lot more. Meanwhile, I can understand certain words or sentences when listening to their songs. Some I can even sing along. I am reading about their culture and history and even learning to cook Korean food. So, we should all be more open minded towards music coming from non-English speaking societies. For me that is part of being global.

I love kdrama, Kpop, kfilm why would i want to watch it in english ? I am french its the same if i ask if you would watch « grey’s anatomy » in french ? I love bts and if They sing in english ok but they are korean why would they reject their nation/cultur/country/pride to do an album in english ? Loving its accepting the differences and live with them not changing the person to feeting yours standards !

I voted for Korean. I've been exposed to K-Dramas & K-Shows before diving in K-Pop or more likely drown myself to this rabbit hole with Bangtan. Korean language is really beautiful. I have learned by watching those dramas & shows the characteristics of the language. And I think they can express more of themselves in Korean, you will notice this during their interviews outside Korea vs those in Korea. Their expressions & sincerity in their music is one of the reasons why their songs appeals to us. I prefer what they are doing right now, with partly in English is still fine with me. I hope that they dont get pressure with that and I trust BigHit on all this. I will not stop wishing them the best & not to loose their identity.

i chose korean, cause while their english songs are fine, i dont listen to them often, if ever really. If they come on, that's fine, but i dont click them. I didnt know Tae's solo songs were in english anyways until the second time i listened but i can't understand him fully so it doesnt even feel like an english song to me :) but i dont really mind, i just think the songs they have done in english aren't my type so far.

Angie

I voted non-issue for the same reason I think others did, but I DO completely agree with what you're saying, Nico. I think interviewers and certain fans should absolutely lay off with inquiries about whether they'll ever do an entire album in English, etc. The boys should do what makes them happy and most comfortable. As it is, there are some BTS songs that are mostly or partly in English, and some of their solo songs or songs individual boys feature on are completely in English. JK has done a LOT of English-language covers and Jimin has done a few too. Winter Bear by V and Tokyo by RM are two examples of songs from solo projects that are 100% in English, while Change by RM & Wale and Waste It on Me by Steve Aoki with RM and JK are a couple examples of songs featuring members that are completely in English. I don't think it's that the boys actually have any issue making music in English, like, as a concept in and of itself, but they don't want to do it all the time. Speaking and singing in Korean is how they can convey most fully what is in their hearts and minds, and the language is a part of their identities. I think that sense of ease and of complete expression may be the beauty you're seeing. I certainly see it too.

I want clarify why I voted nonissue, because I will stand by the boys no matter what they chose to do. It’s all up to them. Korean is beautiful but if they wanna sing or rap in English as well I will support that too.

Christina

I support BTS in whatever they want to do. No matter what they sound good!

Jeana Cotney

Sweet Night by V is all in english and I love it! I think it should be a choice made by BTS. Knowing the boys, I think Korean will always be a part of their albums because it's such a big part of them, like french is a big part of me. :) You just cannot ignore where their from and it's not a bad thing.

Annie

I support whatever BTS chooses, They sound amazing no matter what the content form.

Lacy

I kind of thought that was exactly what I said. Maybe I should have said it differently. Here is another try... for them to feel they need to make an only English album just to be accepted or mainstream would be an abomination to me. I’m aware of Monsta X most recent project and I’m not a fan. At the end of the day though, it seems You and I both agreed on the important thing, which is that BTS should put out music in any media or form they choose.

Kelli HS

I feel they (and any artist) should make the music that works for them and the message they want to tell with the lyrics - whether it is Korean, English, Japanese, Spanish or who knows what language. While I hate the question about an album or song in English, because of the implication that it is something they should do, if BTS decided to make an all English album I would support it (and I'm sure love it) because I do believe that they work hard on everything they share with us and have a clear message and intention for what they put out.

Larenda

As long as they are happy I’m happy. However, an album in full English would be an abomination to me. They are ALL artists and should communicate their art in the medium of their choosing.

Kelli HS

Non issue. BTS does the fuck they want and have made that clear for many years. I trust them and whatever they do I’ll support.

Laura Moore

I prefer them to sing/rap using whatever they’re most comfortable with. If one day they find themselves comfortable enough with English to make an all English album or at least all English songs then great! Until then, I will very happily listen to whatever they have to sing/rap in Korean because I find it to be a truly stunning language and I love the way it sounds in my ear holes.

Lizzie

My hobby has always been learning languages. I can speak five and am really proud of that fact. Korean is a language I love to hear and I am so glad we have so much content in the language, beyond just all the BTS stuff, you have dramas and variety shows at your disposal if you want to constantly be exposed to the language to reinforce your learnings. It is harder for me than the others I learned because when I read in Korean I feel like a child who is learning to read. A really weird and fun feeling hehe. I just want to be able to write the boys in the language one day. Hopefully soon.

cuteonnie

BTS is a Korean group, who sings and raps in Korean and they spread their love for music in their native Mother Tongue. I will never demand an English album from them. Whatever they want to do, I'll support them =)

Tara 아미_큐티_섹시_러블리

I voted for singing in Korean but reading most of these comments I have to agree.... I’m happiest with BTS doing what they are happy and comfortable with.

Sandie Clow

The Korean language is a beautiful language and BTS make me love everything about Korea. Especially, the rap in Korean, it sounds so perfect; they killing it. That's why I prefer for BTS to stay the same that's the reason we loved them; being themselves.

Jehan Park

I feel that they as artist should perform in whichever language they prefer and are comfortable doing . I chose Korean but if they want to perform in swiss or swahili it wouldn't matter because they are artists and their art should be in whatever form they choose

김윤지(Kim Yoonji)

I thought about labeling this a non-issue to me (no matter what language they sing in I will love them for who they are and the message they bring). In the end, I chose singing in Korean. I did this because the meaning in their music and the emotions that come with it is something that everyone can relate to no matter what language you speak. It reminds us that we are all connected and music and the emotions that it brings truly does transcend language.

Liz Powell

Even though BTS are global superstars, and have created their own lane. BTS is Kpop. K stands for Korean. People knew that from their very first listen. I’ll never understand why people want BTS to release music in a language that’s not comfortable for them just to please a market who won’t even give them radio play. If Beyonce can have a world tour without changing her lyrics to another language, BTS can do the same. Westerners are stuck in their own bubble, and force people to adapt to their standards when in reality a lot of societal problems would be resolved if westerners took the time to understand people who are different from them.

Amara MiKelle

Korean is a beautiful language. I love to listen to the. sing in it, speak it. It inspired me to learn it. My daughter is going to school there so that's an incentive as well, but I love BTS and would hate to have them think they should record in English. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜❤

Laura B.

They should continue to use their own language, that's who they are. This is an opportunity for young and old to learn a new language and to expand their knowledge of other cultures in the world.

Nicely said indeed

WhatchaGot2Say

I do really like how the Korean or Japanese language sounds, but I will listen to it either way no matter what language

Army Rose

Tae's two most recents songs that he has written were completely in English and so I think they enjoy pushing themselves and challenging themselves creatively in that way sometimes. They also must like the sound to some degree or they wouldn't choose to do it. So I don't think I could say "they should sing in Korean," but rather, they should sing in the language they want to.

essi

BTS are Amazing! I cant help but look up to them for how proud they are as singers/songwriters of their own language. BTS are one of a kind I just love listening to them because of how unique all 7 of them are and make music so breath taking. They have the right just as anyone else to decide what they want people to hear and for ppl to enjoy whether it's in there language or not.

Keera Stackpole

If I wanted them to sing or rap in English I wouldn't have been a fan for 5 years. I love to search the lyrics up, watch people bring up theories and try learning the language. I love their uniqueness. The decision is up to them though but I hope they stick to their roots. Like their song DOPE, Jimin and Jungkook sing "this is Bangtan style, different from the lying wacks jobs...." That style is what sets them apart from others.

Amlyse Lyseam⁷ OT7

I like RM and Jk's Waste it On me because I can sing along to it since it's in english, but if i were to rank it alongside their other songs it definitely doesn't come close. Them singing in their own language is something else.

🤯🔥👎🏾🤦🏾‍♀️🔥 The complete and utter arrogance of us English speakers. We *really* REALLY need to check our colonization tendencies and take an entire bus' worth of seats!!!🔥 BTS is South Korean. What right do we have to demand they learn another language just do it is easier for us to enjoy their music?! 🤬🤦🏾‍♀️ Want to enjoy their music more? Learn Hangul, and study Korean. It's actually quite rewarding. /end rant /not at you, but this question makes me demented every time I see it. #BTSCanSingInAnyLanguageTheyWant.

I hope they never feel pressured to speak English or song or rap in English it's arrogance to me when people assume that it needs to be in English to enjoy the music

natasha richardson

I hope they don’t feel pressured to release an album in English. Namjoon has even said it would not be the same. I respect that. I am learning basic Korean through them. I wish people would stop demanding that they speak in English and let them be who they are because that is what is so awesome about them. They are teaching the world.

Marguerite Engel

I love when they sing, doesn't matter if it's Japanese, Korean or English. I don't have a preference. I have a preference for their music and their message, and if that means I have to work a little harder to understand, it will make it that much more meaningful. Many artist throughout the history of pop have been very successful singing in their native tongue. Different languages adds an extra element to everything. I think language should never be an issue, whether it is music, movies, dramas, whatever, the great thing about being human everyone has the capacity to adapt to get what they want. I LOVE BTS...I don't rightly care what language they sing or rap in as long as they continue for years to come..💜

Callen Corsica

It’s cool when they rap in English because I can rap along. But they sound so much better in their native language. You can feel every word they say. Plus it’s crazy hearing their diction and each individual syllable they’re pronouncing and how FAST. Yoongi stole my ultimate bias spot for his skill!

Lynk

They should always do what THEY want to do PERIOD. They are the ones creating the music and we as ARMY trust them to do their best and they trust us back :) Plus I love how they mix up and rhyme Korean with English and so forth! 💜✨
