I returned from my vacation in one piece. Switzerland was beautiful.
I just received a message from Patreon about pricing changes in the near future. I'm not sure if you get these notifications as well, but I wanted to reach out regardless. It DOES NOT impact existing subscribers, only new subscribers. I'm making this post available to free members so they can be aware of the upcoming changes as well.
In NOVEMBER 2024, Apple is forcing Patreon to switch over to their in-app purchase system. The Apple Store will then apply a 30% fee to monthly Patreon subscriptions purchased through the Patreon iOS app. Apple applies this fee to all App Store purchases. Patreon has to comply otherwise Apple will remove the Patreon app from their App Store.
This will ONLY impact:
- APPLE IPHONE users who subscribe via the Patreon iOS app
- NEW Patreon subscribers (anyone who subscribes during November 2024 or later)
This will NOT impact:
- Android or web users
- Existing Patreon paid subscribers (anyone subscribed before November 2024)
I wanted to keep you informed because I think this might impact you if you tried to adjust your tier via the app. Also, I know some of you are seasonal supporters! I don't want you to cancel your subscription only to be surprised by a surprise price increase when you return. And of course this would impact you if you wanted to subscribe to other creators in the future.
THIS FEE CAN BE AVOIDED by iPhone users if you commit to using a web browser to subscribe to creators in the future.
Frankly Apple is disgusting me with their price gouging lately and I think I'll be switching to an android for my next phone. Unless Google follows suit 😭

2024-08-13 19:17:17 +0000 UTCI don't think Google will follow suit, but I'm not surprised about Apple because I believe they plan to do another stock split soon, though they'll never return back to not using the 30% increase. For the Iphone users out there, if you consider switching to Samsung/Android (yes ik the ongoing suprifilous debate about which is better) I can guarantee a few things: 1) The camera has better functionality (Its actually proven the the tech used on ios is 3 years behind Samsungs camera functionality) 2) You will have more creative and product utility freedoms for your droid (mostly cause think Samsung to Ps5 as Iphone to Xbox. There's more availability depending on what you use your phone for) 3) FOR ARTISTS ESPECIALLY: Samsung DOES NOT upload automatically to a cloud space! You can disable this on Google too. The key difference is anything uploaded to Apple's cloud per they're Terms and Conditions technically becomes they're property (which is why you use hardwear to save things). You can fact check me yourselves, but that is the legal implications, similar to Adobe. (If you remember the Billie Eilish competition you know EXACTLY what outrage I'm refering to). There are more perks ofc, but the main downside is that Apple's security is automatically better in certain respects because of its single use system to Ios compared to the widely used Android by multiple companies. Also no text message games or money transfers (but I was more speaking on the productivity side of things anyways). I hope this helps anyone, and I'm sorry this happened Bittie :(

Or people who don't realize that they can use the web to avoid fees may be turned off by the fee they see on the app and choose not to subscribe at all

You can reinstall it later, if you really miss it (you won't). But deleting the app will help Apple to figure out that they blew it with this money grab.

I've already deleted the app. I use Chrome on my iToys and have bookmarks for Patreon that follow me around, so it's no big loss. I *was* thinking of upgrading my iPhone and iPad, but nah..... suddenly I'm no longer in the mood. So there is $1000+ in revenue out the window! Way to go Apple!

2024-08-13 18:52:10 +0000 UTCIdk if you have Amazon prime subscription but with it you can access the Amazon photos app and it will back up an unlimited amount of photos online. You can access through the web app and then choose if you want to back up to pc or Amazon drive/cloud. Hope this helps!

The work-around I’ve used on the apps I’ve designed is linking to a web app to handle the subscriptions. I’m not sure why Patreon is forced to use the Apple subscription service as well. Very weird.

And yes, I triple checked and I am certain that current monthly subscribers won't be impacted by this change, only new ones. I'm sure Patreon negotiated that because many current subscribers would leave if they were suddenly charged more.

The only reason I stuck with iPhone with my last phone purchase in 2020 was because I have so many photos from the past decade that I would lose, but figuring out a way to strip those out and put them on an external drive may be worth it at this point. Thankfully for this, though, I operate entirely on the browser version because I hate using apps for routine browsing lol. Even so, goodness.
