Those with ADHD who struggle with these sorts of anxieties, especially when they know/think they are irrational but just can’t help it, need constant reaffirming, whether inebriated or not. Howie tried, more than once mind, to assure Sooch that he passed all his classes (in this conversation but also in pages past) but Sooch kept pressing on. Honesty is always best, not skirting around the issue, and Howie handled it superbly.

2022-04-07 22:45:17 +0000 UTCPoor Sooch needs some cognitive behavior therapy to help with his self-esteem. Even though it seems like a good idea to address potential future problems like this, this sort of conversation (especially having it while he’s still kind of inebriated) is counterproductive and unhelpful and just reinforces his anxiety and problematic thought patterns. Catering to his worries is not the same thing as addressing and treating them, even if Howie is so sweet about it and well-intentioned. A more extreme example is trying to come up with contingency plans for what you'll do if you break up with your SO, or worrying about what will happen if they die young: outside of the context of a pre-nup or a will, you're just borrowing stress and pain from the future for something that may never happen at all! You might stay together forever until you're both a hundred! And worrying (or "planning" or whatever you call it in your head) about it before it happens doesn't make it hurt any less when it DOES happen. From a literary standpoint, though, it's good foreshadowing for if Sooch does have to change schools, though!
