I bought a professional beam dump

In the above video I unbox and assemble a professional (expensive) laser beam dump. May seem like an odd purchase, given I have build one myself and am pleased with its performance.

But since I have never used a professional one, I don't know how well they perform compared to my home-built one. So I bought one for testing it. Thanks for helping me fund these purchases!

At the end of the video I have a few, makeshift tests. I may be biased and unconsciously root for the one I built myself, so I am not calling it yet. Will make some more precise tests for a future, public video.

Here's the video where I build my own beam dump: https://youtu.be/rRIlhskMYAM

Sadly, my 6 year old editing computer died Friday, so I am behind schedule on the next public video. This Patreon video is the first I have made on my back-up solution: my mediocre laptop. Not optimal but it seems to work all right. I hope to release the next public video no later than November 30th - unless my laptop gives up on 4K video editing too...

"Metric beam dump" Careful you don't accidentally pick up an imperial laser ;-)

Yep, the home-built definitely has an advantage by being deeper - making the cone invisible unless you are almost in front of the beam dump. I will try to compare the coatings/paint on the two models in a future video. That's what can make a real difference. The professional model also has grooves on the inside of the 'barrel'. That's probably a good thing - more testing needed :)

Thanks. No doubt that the home-built wins in value for money. Including Danish 25% VAT and shipping I paid €325 (~USD 370) for the tiny professional model. You can make several of the home made for that price - including buying the tools needed for it! My editing computer was a desktop. I have ordered a new one despite the shortage of good PC components and inflated prices. The show must go on :D

I think your home made one works better. I am sure it costs a lot less then the one you bought too. Sorry to here about your laptop that sucks big time. Keep up the great work!

Yeah, first impressions are that your DIY dump is better (but also bigger so maybe that's not fair). Maybe make a similar depth version of yours for a proper test?
