I want to supersize this!

I really need to make a video about vortices. They are one of the beauties of nature.

I was reminded of it when I recently stumbled upon a table lamp in the local supermarket.
A 'tornado' lamp that's really a whirlpool lamp. It is just far from perfect, so I want to make my own version. Any ideas and input for the project is more than welcome.

The teaser at the end is from the video scheduled to go public Saturday, October 31st. It will be an interesting one in my Monster Magnet Meets series. See you there!

Thanks for the plug - quite useful. Definitely need to have control over the speed of the impeller. Too much speed and the vortex will be hidden by bubbles. Too little and no vortex at all... The impeller design does not seem to matter much though.

Have a look at a channel called Integza (Shameless plug as I also patreon him), he loves turbines, and built a rather good vortex bottle. He's a crazy Portuguese guy (who doesn't like tomatoes) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxNHOMJGcj0

Hehe, it will be titled 'Monster magnet meets plasma ball...' I haven't started editing it yet, but there are some great recordings so I have high hopes for the video. Just wish my camera was better in low-light situations, since plasma globes are not bright... But I think I can edit the video clips to be watchable. Looking forward to sharing the result with you. I am still very early in the planning of the super sized vortex lamp. Nothing decided yet on the build, though I will give it a go.

Thanks for the input, Tamas. And sorry for the late reply - I have the house full of carpenters so you may notice new windows in my November video ;) I do like the magnetic coupling. First of all, it is magnetic... suitable for my channel. Second, I don't have to drill any holes in an expensive glass or acrylic container for a shaft - and bother with making it watertight again. The biggest problem with lights is probably the vast amount of possible solutions and choosing the right one. Waiting time is no problem - this will at earliest be a 2021 project. The expensive part will be the clear container. I just looked at the local prices for an acrylic tube, and supersized ones are very expensive. Never realized, plastic could be that expensive xD

Such a tease! Giant magnets and a plasma ball.... I can’t wait. Let me know if I can help with the super sized vortex lamp

I think the trickiest part is the rotating thing, in the self-sturring mug they have a hole in the bottom but having the motor on the outer side and having a magnatic connection is the way to go. The weird bouncing of the balls is caused by the curvature of the glass I think. The light is the easiest part, you can buy LED strips on ebay or aliexpress that has all sorts of programs, find one that comes with a remote that can do solid colors, flip through distinct colors and it can do a crossfade. Cheap but you have to wait a little if you order from China.
