My first journal article: "How To Become A Centaur"

Lots of people have written about the promises and pitfalls of AI: Artificial Intelligence.  This month, I wrote an article for MIT about AI's forgotten cousin, IA: Intelligence Augmentation!  And how, just maybe, IA can save us from a dystopian future.

HOW TO BECOME A CENTAUR (20 min read)

This is the first time I've ever published in a real academic journal!  Hooray, I'm a serious grown-up now.

I finally got around to reading this. It's a great take, I'm stealing the AIA concept for future discussions with friends :) Also, shared to all of the Social Channels, so hopefully it gets even more views!

Congrats on the article. I agree that there is a lot of room for computers and humans to work together. Currently, to take full advantage of current computer strengths requires humans to think a little bit like computers (empathy with computers? Or at the very least think like a programmer). Maybe the folks at Dynamicland will help with that. --Tim

Sorry for posting another comment, but I just want to say I loved your article. You have that knack for taking an immensely complicated and problematic subject, and making the whole thing so plain that anyone can understand it. That's a wonderful skill, not just because it's useful for people to understand things worth understanding, but also because it's humble, respectful, and kind to your reader. And oh my gosh, that thing about symbiotic technology and biomimicry... After reading that, I'm even more convinced that it would be profitable for you and the Metacurrency/Holochain folks to have a chat. Sorry for bringing it up again -- I just think that the overlap between your philosophies and theirs on appropriate technology is striking. If you're interested, DM me and I'll set up an introduction between you and the founders/thinkers.

Why am I not surprised that you're going to Dynamicland? I learned about them a couple months ago and thought, "hey, this Bret Victor guy is on Nicky Case's wavelength -- systems thinking and human-friendly visualisations of complex concepts all in one mind!" Not surprised, but delighted nonetheless -- for you, and to see what comes out of that relationship. Speaking of systems thinking and computing, have you heard of the Holochain project? It's a very interesting distributed computing project that I caught wind of a few months ago. In my mind it has a lot of the elements of a system that the world desperately needs -- in a nutshell it's a crypto platform that tips the Bitcoin model upside-down by putting people at the centre rather than the almighty data. It's designed by a bunch of systems thinkers and social activists who want to change the world and seem to be attracting the right kind of community to make that happen. NB I'm not part of the team; just someone who wants to see it succeed. Hope you take this pitch in that spirit :) it just strikes me as something that both you and Bret would be interested in.

I wish you all the success πŸ’
