I've been very busy over the last couple of years writing scripts, and trying to keep drawing my own comics in between. That is something I've done for so long that when I stop, I don't feel good. At times I would get burned out on trying to write something worth reading when I had put everything I had into Giant Days and By Night scripts. This ended up with me generating non-stories that seemed half good, that I ostensibly had time to draw, but that were ideas-light, if you like. I couldn't beef them up to fighting weight. Often there were piles of sketches, and notions to "draw it like a manga" or similar, but I couldn't really get going.
My favourite of these projects was "Spell Check", a series about Shelley's post-Britpop university days in Manchester. The fact that it's similar in theme to Giant Days is evidence of a lack of inspiration, perhaps, but it was about magic, so in practice it would have been quite different. There are two test pages and a character sheet - enjoy. I might still do this one, one day, a fun one-shot, or something else altogether. I just didn't have the goose to take it on properly at the time.
I drew these the week after I finished Steeple. The week after that, I learned the value of rest.
