End of November Update

Hello everyone,

Progress this month mostly consisted of continuing to replace old SHP assets with new, updated graphics compatible with the lighting system, as well as making a number of derelict junk assets (these will be used in resource collection).

This includes a lot of civilian city assets, which, while many already existed, required adding damage, garrisoned and light frames. As there were 30 of these blue roof city buildings, this was a pretty laborious task, but the results look quite good.

Note that more work needs to be done to make sure that infantry entering and exiting buildings must pass through the doorway; again, since there are quite a few buildings in the game, and the exact entrance/exit point must be manually input, this is quite a lot of work for such a seemingly simple feature.

There are also some capturable civilian buildings we updated.

Here are some screenshots of the derelicts. Some of them are pretty massive. In addition to being eye candy, these things will also serve as resource nodes that players can salvage from.

A nice bonus of pixel-accurate Z-depth frames; buildings can be merged or placed very close together to appear as part of the same overall building.

Walls are also given a section that extends beneath the floor, so when placed on slopes, they can just appear as a stepped wall, rather than need special frames that correspond to each slope type (this would be hugely inefficient and require hundreds of additional frames).

This concludes this month's updates. Unfortunately, both Gustas and Thomas were quite busy with things outside of DORF, and so could not get too much work done on new features this month. Next month we can hopefully get more work done with resources in general, including updating that logistics system and finalizing more player-controlled structures.

Comments

We may allow the derelicts to be garrisoned, although currently their main purpose is to be salvaged for resources.

The most recent showcase on derelicts was what convinced me to finally start supporting you guys on Patreon! The scale of the vehicles, structures, and massive deposits of resources next to the player-controlled troops is staggering as was the detail put into them. I wonder, will the derelict vehicles shown also be able to be garrisoned by infantry for makeshift cover? Or are they solely functioning as resource deposits only? Either way, love what you guys are doing, and the easter eggs too with some of the vehicles were a joy to see.

Or company of heroes, nice idea

Question, noticed in the video that infantry become very small and hard to read when you really zoom out. I understand the wish to have realistic unit sizes, so have you ever thought about adding hovering Emblems to infantry when you really zoom out like Homeworld or some of the Wargame RTS games? Would allow you to maintain realistic sizes without sacrificing visual clarity.
