Twenty Years Our Friend – A Rainbow Retrospective

If this had happened when I was a kid, I'd have been devastated. When YBF first started, I used to turn the living room clock to face the wall, so I could pretend the half hour would never end. Couldn't believe there was a whole show about people falling over. But these days, like you, I didn't even realise it was still on.

Cheers. Doing this one was like writing the Larry Grayson piece, as I grew such affection for him by the end and really wanted to get that across. I just watched the Uncle Bill episode, and the sideburn is a real 'thanking the guards in English in The Great Escape' moment

How do you feel about you've been framed being axed I thought it ended years ago

Lee Jones

Lovely tribute to Geoffrey. I really felt sad when he died. For more of his brilliance, I recommend the episode where he goes out and leaves grumpy Uncle Bill in charge. It's that stock sitcom trope of 'new boss worse than old boss' (cf. Porridge - Disturbing the Peace, Father Ted - New Jack City) except of course it's Geoffrey in disguise all along, to teach Zippy and co. a lesson, so Red Dwarf's Queeg basically.

If I've got it in me, at some point I want to do a 50 RJ&F (and M) Bangers type video, because they're dying for a proper musical reappraisal. Over 1000 songs!

Rod, Jane, Freddy and Matthew from Sooty and Co should have been given an Ivor Novello. Their entire catalogue is genuinely brilliant. “Junk is Funky” for eg is an instant classic.

Knew I shouldn't have cut out all the scenes where Geoffrey announced the daily death toll.

I'd love to see a rabid Bungle let loose on the Apaches set.

It may please you to know I recently stumbled upon (and nabbed) a large cache of Pipkins episodes for a future video.

Rainbows everywhere, being lectured on hand hygiene, imaginary company. This video is a Proustian gateway back to the first lockdown.

Also, seeing Geoffrey saying 'Oh dear!' at the various mishaps on the farm made me realise the little bit of magic missing from the 'Apaches' public information film.

In school, we had the lyrics to the theme as: 'Every morning Zippy Sees the rainbow in the sky, Then Geoffrey sticks his dick out the window And pisses in his eye' Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Jane Freddy & Rod!

With 'Pipkins' , 'Crystal Tipps' and 1970s 'Sooty', possibly humankind's greatest achievement*
