Oh these are some of the toughest chapters to read. First, Serpico’s dilemma with his mother and her dementia leading to her being burned at the stake is so sad. He was in a no win situation from the start. If he had admitted any association, I’m sure it would have reflected on Farnese due to the reputation as a devil child. Btw, Guts was also a devil child for different reasons, and we have had a demon baby. A theme? Both Serpico’s mother and Casca have lost their minds, for whatever reason. Serpico deals with his mother the best way he could for a child, but had detached feelings for her. He loved her but I do not feel like there was a warmth between them. I feel it was a burden. I’m sure with her death there were lots of feelings of relief, love and lots of survivors guilt mixed in there. Very difficult situation. On the other hand Guts is in the throws of trying to take care of someone who is not in control of themselves. They have no ability to consent to anything yet are still basically a warrior. That is tough. Casca can fight. That blood she was covered in was not hers..... Guts himself is not exactly all there either.... not the most mentally stable individual. I must give him credit though, he does recognize his weaknesses. I actually think that proves that instead of becoming an inhuman monster, it’s just the opposite. He knows that he is capable of harming Casca due to his inner rage. I believe he loves her with all his heart, but sometimes when you see a loved one in a state like this and you are forced to take care of them on your own with little help..... you can get mad at them. Hmmmm... am I speaking from experience? Maybe...... I did have some help.... not much though.....
