Good morning my sweet Patrons!
We are even further southwest after leaving from a wonderful week on the ball at Marathon. What a great little stop Marathon was, we got to make some wonderful new friends. Rhys has been making more kid friends than we’ve been making adult friends which is great!
After we left Marathon we headed for Looe Key Reef in hopes that we would be able to snorkel this wonderful, very alive reef. However, once we hooked onto the mooring ball it turned into a little bit of a nightmare! The weather called for 1-2’ seas that day but it was more like 5-6’s. To make matters worse, the current had our Gecko sideways to the swells. Each time the swell came in, which seem to be every 3-4 seconds that day, we could hear the sound of our dishes banging worse then we had ever heard before and could see our T.V. basically breaking from the wall mount as it tossed back and forth.
So we waited about an hour or so to see if the seas would calm down, they didn’t. By that time I had enough and felt sicker then I’ve ever been so we decided that it just wasn’t going to happen that day. We continued on, we headed for a little anchorage that was about 4.5 miles away (this reef is about that far offshore) in hopes that we could head back to Looe Key Reef the following day. Unfortunately, the next day was the same so we were unable to go. We were rather bummed as we’ve been looking forward to that reef for quite some time…A couple of months actually. One of our Patrons, Randy is who recommended the Reef to us!
When we were there we could see the bottom easily in 25 feet and could see stingrays and beautiful fish under our boat. Even in rough seas! It was amazing! Jeremiah was really bummed because he was excited to use a new housing for our GoPro that makes underwater video clear for you. On the bright side, that only means that we get to hit that spot on the way back north! So don't worry! We'll be bringing you the footage you want!
So we sailed on! We're now at NAS Boca Chica, a Naval base marina and this place is wonderful! It is super cheap for a Key West Marina, has a private beach, nice little tiki bar and feels a bit like home to be surrounded by other military families!
This is the spot that we’ll have the kids come into before we continue on for the summer. We plan to keep this as home base for a month or two since it is so cheap. While here, we'll take trips to the Dry Tortugas, downtown Key West, hopefully back out to Looe Key Reef and many other snorkel spots. Jeremiah and I are planning to get dive certified so who knows, maybe we will do that too! Well until the next time my sweet sweet patrons, we love you and thank you for all your support!
Photo: This was taken as we sailed from Marathon, Florida. We've been sailing offshore, we prefer it by far to the inner side along the Gulf.
