Sick Of It - S1 E4
Added 2025-07-06 13:00:07 +0000 UTCI got to admit, I still think this show is a bit weird. LOL. I think I am just too used to shows being a clear genre, like comedy, drama, thriller, etc.... I am not sure what genre this show is... It's just... Karl. Hehe

I do think those who consume a lot of American media are more used to shows fitting the formula of s distinct genre and while some British shows definitely do too, it's common for them to straddle genre and blend tones. You get comedy, drama, pathos, horror all at once sometimes and we favour subtlety over flashing lights. We see life as it is and not what we want it to be, by and large, and favour realism. Not all shows reflect this of course, but a lot do. This is kind of the case with Sick of It but it is also as you said, just very Karl - the only reason there's any real energy in his other stuff is because he's being prodded with a stick by Ricky and Steve. On his own, he's a fairly dry, laconic, mildly eccentric man who balances the wholly ordinary with a smattering of fairly unique ways of thinking. I actually love how subtle and almost effortless Sick of It is. It's not thrilling television, but it's also very honest and lacks pretence. I wish I could say the same about Ricky Gervais' After Life for example. It's comparable on its "life-thru-a-cynical-lens, lightly existential tone" but I'm afraid that After Life is so in your face, truly dreadful, and Karl should be so proud of what he achieved with Sick of It. 🤗
