When they re-show Fawlty Towers on TV now (if they do), they remove the references the Major used.
What a manic episode this was, especially with the fire drill and Sybil constantly calling. Your reaction to this one was so much fun. I really enjoyed my dinner whilst half lying down watching it (and no side effects ;) ).
As a piece of trivia... in order of height... John Cleese (1.93m), Steve 'Hello ladies' Merchant (2.00m), Greg Davies (2.03m). Oh and Karl is 1.86m

I'll try to keep this as non-grosse as possible.
I had an ingrown toenail when I was about 18. It kind of cuts into the flesh along the side of the toenail and can get infected and pussy (puss filled, not weak and pathetic or cute and furry), so you need to bathe it in saline solution then dress and bandage it with antiseptic and it will heal, but if it keeps recurring, you need to have it cut out.
When I had the procedure done it was just a day patient situation and only required local anaesthetic. It was done in under an hour and I got to watch the whole thing! I'm sure you wouldn't want to do that, but I found it fascinating. The weirdest part was that I couldn't feel anything due to the anaesthetic, but I could feel them scraping on the bone as they removed the nail root that attaches to the bone and it vibrated right up my leg bones. Very odd experience.

Not mentioning the war (World War 2) is something that all British people have to remember when in the company of our German friends even if we really want to make a serious point about far right politics of the 20th Century or do a funny Hitler impression.
You must find the same when in the company of your Argentinian friends. Do you ever find you really want to discuss Islas Malvinas or do a Margaret Thatcher impression? It's tempting isn't it?

You were talking about reacting to QI recently. There is an episode of QI (called "inequality") where Henning Wehn mentions the war. It might be an interesting place to start.
The episode is quite easy to find online but make sure you get QI XL (about 44 minutes) rather than the regular QI (about 28 minutes).

You'd think so, but weirdly once I regained some of my grip on reality I was very calm, chilled out and unusually for me, positive. It's crazy how shit like this can completely change your outlook on life. Instead of letting it get me down, stressing and thinking the worse, I went the totally opposite direction and I think became a better person because of it.
Most people could not understand why I was just acting like I basically had a cold or something, and were stunned that I still had my sense of humour.
Thanks for the kind words.

And slightly off topic here but did you ever get to see Karl's brother? He was on some random TV show a few years ago about benefits claimants. I can remember seeing it on YouTube but I'm not sure if I could find again it 'cause I don't think the title had anything to do with Karl. It's not comedy anyway so not reaction worthy. Are you sure that your brother doesn't keep calling you to wind you up as he knows it drives you mad? That's the sort of thing I would do to my sister. Please dont think im mean to my lil sister all the time. She gives as good as she gets believe me π€.
I've never got past the first 20 minutes of 4 weddings and a funeral π΄π΄π΄
I had to do a unplanned fire drill last month at work. The guys I support didn't move a muscle but did shout at me to stop the noise as they were watching TV π
the most inappropriate moment I have ever known a fire alarm to go off was at a wedding. Just as the priest or vicar said i now pronounce you man and π¨π¨π¨ we all had to evacuate. 20 minutes later we went back in to continue. They were not a happy couple. Maybe if that happened in the film 4 wedding and a funeral might have been better.
I met a beautiful German girl whilst on holiday years about and made plans to go over to see her. Sadly my phone broke and so I never heard from her or saw her again π this was years before Facebook was a thing. For the life of me I can't remember her name now.

Theres a few things from this episode you could probably clip out for YouTube, from Manuel entering and the Major moose scene, the fire drill scene, and the big one being Basil welcoming the Germans into the dining room through to the end, though some cut it off when the doctor shows up

Hiya Mandy,
Four Weddings and a Funeral - canβt remember it π Iβm not a fan of watching repeats, saw this film in the cinema eons ago. Iβll give most movies a shot, even if they turn out awful. The only movie I recall not finishing, and youβre gonna be shocked by this, was βInglourious Basterdsβ. To top if off, we were actually at the *cinema* and walked out half way thru π«’ not my decision actually, but it might have been something to do with the bottle of wine we had at dinner, and a subsequent lack of concentrationβ¦ I DO mean to get round to watching this movie sometime π
Oh wait, a 2nd film comes to mind - "The Da Vinci Codeβ - also walked out of the cinema half way thru - might have been wine related, but weβd both already read the book, and were making very critical comparisons to the movie π could not put them aside to enjoy the movie for what it wasβ¦ no plans to watch that one hehe
Yep, surgery is what they call it π€ YouTube has examples π€’ - looks like anyone could do it with a needle and some pliers π
In Turkish they use their word for βcheeseβ as slang to mean slut! I still donβt get the connection π€£
Are you always on time Mandy? π
Dunno if youβre familiar with any WWII details, from documentaries on the Discovery channel or History at school π€ Iβll mention this, just in case: In his concussed word-play, Fawlty made several references to prominent German Nazi Party figures from that period. He mentioned Holocaust architect βHimmlerβ, he called Eva Braun, photographer and brief wife of Hitler, Eva βPrawnβ. Mistook a βpickled herringβ for primary architect of the police state βHerman GΓΆringβ - a prawn cocktail for minister of propaganda βJoseph Goebbelsβ, and thought to bring up German Minister of foreign affairs Joachim βVon Ribbentropβ for no reason whatsoever π
Classic episode, awesome reaction π«Ά
Thanks Mandy

Regarding Basil's reaction to the black doctor, I think Basil was just surprised to see a black guy. I know at least where I grew up in the late 80s and into the 90s I knew of like one black family that's it. Probably would have been even less common in the 70s in Torquay. Now if this was set in Wolverhampton, itd be completely different, as that area is known for having a large black community after the WW2 that has grown and grown

I had an ingrowing toenail removed as a child (just the ingrown part). I could even watch it happen while he was cutting it out. Quite interesting.
It hurt a bit after, but not as much as it did before. I couldn't walk...
It was just basically that the nailbeds (where the nail grows from) was a little too wide, so it grew UNDER the skin, hurt a lot and became infected.

I LOVE the fire drill scene. It's always funny. It's like a comedy of errors. Love the Major keep bringing up about burglars and he not listening π
And Basil losing it when the phone rings π Then you got Manuels ridiculous comedy flailing ,setting everything on fire haha. It's great. That scene to me could have been enough to end the episode on, could have sacked off the Germans and made that another episode

Yeah all clear as of the end of 2022. Still a few issues that will probably never go due to scarring at the base of the brain where the lymphocytes were causing pressure, but fairly minor (I forget words & names plus easily fatigued.. that sort of thing). Still having regular check ups though as is always the way with any cancer.
thanks for asking ,, as you can see though, I can see the humour in it (like the story where I woke up after a night where I did an impression of the exorcist from both ends, and thought I was in a Star Wars film ha ha)

In answer Mandy, yes the NHS does do surgical removals of ingrown toenails. I had been on a big marching event in Nijmegen in Holland, walked 40km a day for 4 straight days. Agony by end but I got a medal for it. Anyway, one side of toenail had ingrown so I went to have it removed. You can get a partial or full removal of the nail. Basically they just numb up your foot and cut the nail out. Then burn the area with sodium hydroxide to stop it growing back. Takes about half an hour. You just have to wear big socks for a couple of weeks after for the dressing.

Different times - and all that, granted- but it's really sad to see some of the **** they got away with in old sitcoms. And it only gets worse with time.

Glad you liked it, the fire drill is manic π. As you say, some of the words used in this Ep, couldnβt be used today. Itβs probably the most badly dated of all the episodes, but that asideβ¦ still funny.
The next one is my favourite. Youβll love Mrs Richards. Sheβs the perfect guest for Basil ! π

I had a concussion 35 years ago. It was from a fairly minor motorcycle accident. I was on my way to work and was just around the corner from there. Broke my little finger and dislocated it on my left hand. Decided I wanted to go to a local hospital so rode 40 miles to my local hospital and part way through the journey my head started to be incredibly painful with the headache from hell. Doctors said I had a concussion and put my arm in a sling. Told me if I try to ride home they will call the police ha ha.
That was as much of a problem it caused me thankfully.
Back in 2021, something I have mentioned before, I had blood cancer and that really messed with my brain causing all sorts of misfires including seizures, a second personality and extreme paranoia. I do not remember May and June of that year at all. All I remember is going to sleep on the 30th April and waking up some point in July in a hospital bed. During those two months I had been in three hospitals, undergone multiple tests and had still not been diagnosed. I also was convinced the doctors and one of my friends were trying to murder me, then killed me and I went to hell.
I also tried escaping the hospital several times and had to be sedated. I don't remember any of that, just the tail end of it when I was in hell and the guy in the bed next to me was a demon who was trying to harvest my organs .. that bit though was when I was starting to regain control of my brain but was operating alongside the mad personality.
There are so many humourous stories I can tell during this time period, but I have taken up too much of your swiss cheese brain time.
