I believe the pedal bin is a very close relation to the pedal stool, evolutionarily speaking. But I have been known to be wrong. Also on that topic, there is an 'evolutionary ladder', but no 'pedal ladder'. 🤔 actually, there is no 'evolutionary ladder' either, evolution doesn't work that way, and ladders are for aiding moths in escaping from bathtubs, soooo... hope that helped.

Thank you for the detailed reply but my query was specifically regarding the item known in the UK as a pedal bin. I feel that trash can is the American equivalent of a rubbish bin. It's the pedal element that was of interest to me. Mandy (Cane Lane) didn't know what a pedal bin was by name but when she saw it, she was familiar with the item itself. I wondered what she and her country folk call that item.

Americans say trash can. They don't use the word bin because, for them, a bin is a container for storing things. It can also refer to large storage tubs. “Have you seen my blue sweater?” “It’s in the bin with the blue lid under the bed.” It also refers to things like a donation bin, recycling bin, etc. Because it's not actual rubbish, it's just being stored until it gets reused. Also, pedal trash can just sounds daft. I hope this helps.
