"CD / Shutter Speed" Early Access

Hello!

"CD /" videos were supposed to be the shortest, easiest type of video. But noooo, I had to make it complicated. I'm not sure even *I* understand most of what I explained.

Please enjoy!

The 'D' in Captain D stands for Integrity. You deserve every subscription and more.

SirMangler

I just want to say how incredible it is that you pulled the previous video, rather that just add a correction. You are a too good to us. Thank you.

Benjamin Esterson

E.g., https://mkbhd.com/products/30-fps-t-shirt

Michael McWatters

Yep. I’ve already heard this from someone else. I completely screwed this part up and I’m not sure I can leave the video up with this level of misinformation :/

Captain Disillusion

MKBHD swears by 30fps being the one true framerate so much he ever has merch touting 30fps being better than 24fps or 60fps

Marcin Wichary

Fantastic video as always. Unfortunately I have to disagree with you at 8:10 when you say "At a given shutter speed, a mechanical shutter takes that time to traverse the whole frame." A mechanical shutter in a DSLR camera always travels at the same speed across the frame, generally taking about 1/200 for that trip. So for a 1/4000 exposure, only 5% of the sensor is exposed at any given time, in a rolling manner from one side to the other using the two mechanical curtains. So rolling shutter is very much possible with a focal-plane mechanical shutter. It's just that mechanical shutters are generally faster than electronic shutters so the effect is less noticeable.

Ren

I died laughing at the MKBHD 25fps/30fps joke

Marcin Wichary

So good! What's up with the framing of that portrait of MKBHD around 3:47 when you were talking about 24fps being the best? It felt like you were making a reference or call out.

Corey Lane Menscher

Even better! As usual, the Captain’s references go deep.

Benoit Doidic

I thought I was going to watch a video about shutter speeds, but this was way more than that. I appreciate the part about rotating prisms in high speed film cameras. Thank you, Captain!

Martin Samuelsson

Captain, this is insane. You've once again outdone yourself! Congrats!

blueshifter1137

Let me add more context: at that moment, the Captain says that the world agrees that 24 fps is the best frame rate . Well, MKBHD (Marques Brownlee) is a fan of 30 fps, even sells a t-shirt which says “30 fps is better than 24 or 60 fps”.

Olivier Lombardi

ooooh, I felt that ending. Absolutely mashing the controller.

A Brinkman

Also, drop Nicole Kidman and bring back the AMC Clip!

Benoit Doidic

All the framed photos are of YouTube creators who have at one time or another made a video about video frame rates. The one at 3:48 is the very popular tech reviewer Marques Brownlee. (Others are Noodle, The Slow Mo Guys, and Filmmaker IQ)

Benoit Doidic

Filmmaker IQ? That’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time (love that the YouTuber hall of fame includes two displays for Disney’s Star Wars)

Benoit Doidic

That was worth the wait!

Norman

I love it. I definitely know I don't understand how that works now! (just kidding?) Please keep up the good work.

Hyperballad Eyes

Thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks, Captain! :)

Antisoda

the watch is great!

Brian L Hughes

Could have... adjusted the frame rate of your take to sync up to 25 secs. (but that would be cheating) :-D

Greeky

The drumming I got right every time. It’s saying all the stuff before it in one take and timing it to exactly 25 secs (YouTube’s end card length) that was the REAL challenge. I think we did 5-6 takes :)

Captain Disillusion

How many takes did the last drum roll take?!? <3 (a heart, not a guess at how many takes it took)

Greeky

I have never failed to learn something from your videos, and this doesn't disappoint.

David Whitney

Feel like I am missing something here and at the risk of sounding dumb, who is the guy in the portrait in video the video at 3:48 (or any of the photos in the back wall)?

Tamerax

That opening, I was not prepared haha

Martin Holmström

Excellent as usual. I really look forward to these. The only videos I ever rewatch. Kudos!

Steve Starcke

Legitimately the best explainer vid I have seen on the subject, and the best I have seen by you, CD! Excellent work, hilarious as always, and innovative!

Jonathan LaRiviere

Excellent work, once again. I learned things I've learned before, but now they make sense!

Arto Rantala

As someone who puts way more effort into simple videos than any sane person would, I always appreciate these.

Bizzaro.

I'm horrified at the fact I've never provided bathroom breaks for my programs. I'll await my AI lawsuit for poor working conditions.

Sean Daggett

Get out the multipurpose wrench and fix it, that can't go wrong at all....

Sean Daggett

Right, ok. In that case (I'm so sorry) a smidge of feedback 😛 The numbers are green, and the connecting lines between the left and the right are glowing green, and it looks an _awful_ lot like an equal sign. So it kinda looked like it said "12 FPS = 180°", and then changed to "24 FPS = 180°", etc. Which made it look like it was demonstrating a conversion. But as it is it's instead showing that all three of 12 FPS, 24 FPS, and 30 FPS... have a shutter angle of 180°? Is there somewhere else in the frame I should be looking to see something changing as the FPS changes? I know what it can feel like to get feedback at the eleventh hour, so I'm sorry. I wish I could have been confused earlier 😅

Christopher Vollick

Cool. So they don't know how to make their logo aesthetically pleasing either then!

Rob Sedgebeer

I feel like these videos would be great in an aesthetics of broadcasting class.

Dan Shahin

Ah, I haven't seen that channel, thanks for the explanation! I'll have to check it out. Stellar work as always, Cap!

Paper and Light

It’s a very lazy parody of the YouTube channel “Real Engineering” 😅

Captain Disillusion

The benefit of shutter angle is that it’s independent of frame rate! 180° means 1/2 the duration of a frame at any frame rate.

Captain Disillusion

Okay, this one is worth watching over and over. Not just for the content (which is beautifully arranged, articulated, and overwhelmed my brain), but for the amazing polish and references and... well, I'll just have to watch it again!

Jon Roberts

Hello! Quick question (hopefully). When talking about Shutter Angle (~2:45) the number on the left (FPS) changes, but the angle stays 180° the whole time. Are they both supposed to change together, or did I misunderstand what this is trying to convey?

Christopher Vollick

This is amazing, I feel like my brain is about to explode with info! Question: why does your v/o change at the 1:18 mark? It sounds like you're doing a different accent, kind of a an old timey meets Irish meets Sean Connery?

Paper and Light

This is my favorite video in this series so far. I'm one of those still image types, but I've always been curious about all that wobbly image stuff. I've always used the mechanical shutter on my camera because I've heard "electronic shutter _baaaaad_ clicky mechanical shutter _gooood_," but my understanding is much better now. Plus, the scary film moving claw is absolutely delightful and will probably live rent free in my head for months.

Evan Foster

Thx, I know. I was trying to find the new logo and had to go to the website to download the official asset. But the asset is just the logo shape itself, cropped to its very edges! So I was like, “sigh, old one is fine for now.”

Captain Disillusion

I feel ontologically attacked by the outro. 10/10. Would lose all rings and start over again.

Seth Wrinkle

I always learn so much from CD/

Ami Yamato

Great stuff as always, mate.

Sam Bishop

Awesome. Minor, tiny thing: The Patreon logo on the end card is the terrible old one, as opposed to the terrible new one.

Rob Sedgebeer

I was waiting to hear "The full, uncught *The _Real Engineering_ of Shutter Design* video is available for subscribers on Nebula."
