Before/After VFX - "The Debunkathon"
Added 2020-04-11 21:43:19 +0000 UTC
Haven't done one of these since way back on the "Amazing Water Trick" episode, but I think it's warranted for the latest video.
It's the entire thing in split-screen - VFX on top, no VFX on bottom.
During the "debunking" segments I try to display the main assets used in the graphics.
(best viewed on a mobile device vertically, or on a larger display in full-screen)
1:35 woah that's trippy...

Thank you for the side-by-side. I don't have the time to watch your edit bay deliriums, but this gives a good idea of the work and creativity you put into your videos. (As if that wouldn't be evident from the videos themselves!)

Honored to help a little bit via Patreon. A long-time favorite. I wish I could do more during these uncertain times.

Great split! Love it :) and it is very inspirational to see the behind the scenes. I just wonder why you have done so many greenscreen scenes without the need to use it. (If i got it right ^^)

I thought about it. The card in the video I made manually, calculating the image slices in after effects, printing and glueing the lens on by hand (toon like 5 attempts!) And to be honest, I didn’t get the math exactly right. But if I can find a place to easily mass produce them, sure, I’d make it a merch item :)

Yes, I thought he had faked it but the original footage seems legit! If so, want one too 😍 EDIT: He mentioned taling the shots for it in the production photos post and putting more detail about that later, so yes he did make one!

You know what I want? The lenticular 3D postcard. Is that thing going to become some swag we can buy from you, Captain? Or is it for sale already?

Is the over-enunciation of the word 'illusion' at 2:28 an Arrested Development reference?

I don't remember exactly the reason that one shot (it's 2 takes of the same shot) had to be not on green-screen, but it was probably a judgement call between a bunch of little issues. In that lighting the green-screen doesn't really give you a lot to work with, especially on the floor. - - That's certainly a good explanation for how Zach leaves the ladder, but the painted-on graffiti ladder on the wall seems pretty solid. Impressive if a whole window was hidden in plain sight the entire time!

So awesome to see the process, and the amount of work behind one of these videos. Btw, Cap, why in a few shots, when there wasn't a lot happening in the final shot, why in the raw footage do you became transparent briefly?

I was curious about the random opacity thing as well.

Yay! Thanks for this! Hope it wasn't too much extra work to show the side-by-side comparison. We want more of these!

That is so great to see! Thank you Captain! I have a few questions after watching the version with no VFX:
1. In some scenes it looks like you cut to a 50% opacity version of the charachter, is it to show, that you have also recorded a blank backplate? In the green screen clips I understand it's for matching the perspective of the room?
2. The scene where you have your hands on a lot of tiles, and they explode and you hit the ceiling, the tiles there jump up like something really exploded under them. Were they on a table and someone punched it from the bottom? How did you manage to get such a nice movement from them?
Thank you so much for all the amazing content, cant wait for more!

Yes! I had two people help me on a few shots. Really saved my sanity! One of them I believe is a patron (say hi if you see this, Joey!)

I hope you do more of these split-screen comparison videos. I, for one, really enjoy seeing you flail around on a green screen and somehow make it look totally natural in the final edit. I am curious, for the shots at 5:30, why you didn't shoot that on the green screen. Did you have to roto the entire shot? Or did you key out the red walls... somehow? Also, re: the Zach King ladder shot, my guess is that there's a window just above the ladder that was painted out. When he climbs up the ladder for the last time, he climbs through the window into the building, and the ladder is quickly pulled away and painted out, just like the rest of the video. As always, great work!
