Hmm, I pretty much did same as you, but added a few loops to the cylinder (including top and bottom) before applying the modifiers. That let me keep the Subdivision Surface at just 2, resulting in larger, smoother bumps. The texture I used was Voronoi. I also added a Simple Deform modifier to give it that whirlpool twist. Blender is bizarre, but once you start getting the hang of it, feels very powerful. I also used it to explode the YouTube player and for the Bill and Ted phone booth at the end. Renders incredibly slow though!

That was really awesome. I tried for a bit to make a dumb turbulated cylinder in Blender like you did, but I can't find the proper buttons.
