So glad this reaction won the vote. This was filmed in my home town and is filled with deadpan Northern English humour. FYI that opening film scene was a genuine 1960s promo that the local council ran in cinemas to show off the city.

the suicide scene is just the perfect representation of British humour. you could be n the verge of death then two minutes later alive and well discussing the best ways to actually off yourself. we have a wonderfully dark sense of humour that is so relaxed that it scares people yet....its the best way t get through the dark moments, we don't give life affirming, life needs living pick me ups, we give, 'well youre a tosspot for thinking thats the worst it can be' affirmations of it could be worse.

I'm a big fan of Angela's Ashes, which is also Robert Carlyle. Gets a bit tender to watch in places though. That's another poor working class film

They did the Full Monty for real, & most of the people in the crowd weren't actors but people from the area, & hadn't been told that the actors would do the full reveal so to speak. So when they threw the hats the reaction was wild for that reason.

Two guys...alone in a storage unit...watching The Full Monty. Imagine if someone just walked in at this moment lol.

That final scene was shot with a real audience of local Sheffield people who were told to just come along to see it and then they just dotted the actors in and around the audience for their shots. Another good film from around this time about working class industry closure and pulling together is Brassed Off. There was a rash of films like this around that time.

Another one from around the same time which shows the lead up to coal pit closure in Yorkshire is Brassed Off. It's one of my favourites and stars Ewan McGregor and Pete Postlethwaite ❤️

You should see the The 51st State, with Robert Carlyle and Samuel Jackson - very good fun, you'd like that one!

Another great working class film with some nice touching moments is Billy Elliot, if you've both not seen it
