I remember seeing this in the theater and that at that time it was banned all over, including (I think) the UK. To me, it was clearly a 'what if' story - not even saying there was no Jesus, but saying there WAS, but what if the wrong person was recognized? LOVED Holy Grail, but this inspired another level of thought, if you gave the time.

2023-01-03 16:17:16 +0000 UTCI watched that after watching the boys reaction to the movie. It was Cleese and Michael Palin on the show with Muggeridge and the Bishop of Southwark. Palin was seething by the end of it - very un-Palin like behaviour! It's all up on YouTube to watch back and marvel at.

It caused scandal and uproar when it was released and was even banned in some cinemas in the UK and given the highest film rating in the ones it was shown in. There's an interview between John Cleese, Graham Chapman(I think) and two old farts from the BBC at the time. I think one was Malcolm Muggeridge and the other was a bishop or something and they basically ripped the Python boys to pieces, completely misunderstood the point of the film (I don't know if they'd even seen it) and wouldn't let the Pythons get a word in edgeways. I remember seeing a modern interview with John Cleese about it and he said he was just enraged by the entire interview and situation because these silly old farts had no idea what they were talking about.
