0.7 Development Update 31 and an Important Poll

Hey, folks!

Been a month since the last Dev Update. Had a lot of polls and updates and specials in the meantime.

By the way! The Halloween Special is done! If you were eligible for the rewards, you should have received an email last Wednesday, but in case you didn't, just use the same folder link. You will find the finished "flat" and the VR versions of Rae's animation inside! We've actually rented two extra render farm instances to get it finished before the Valentine Special. Didn't want to ask you folks to splurge on another special while you haven't yet received the rewards from the previous one. Once again, sorry for the delay!

Speaking of which.

Valentine Special - Erotic Estates Artbook

...is now available! In full! If you are pledged to Friend or Resident, you can get it there right now - ➡️https://rift.ink/418FamR

We're still going to revise some bits and add some bonus content to it. Stuff like the animation loops for all the artworks, yeah?

Just make sure to be subscribed to Friend or Resident tiers on February 28th to get the permanent links to all the content and any additional goodies should there be some. Patreon force-enabled the subscription system update, and we can no longer reliably collect the list of eligible Patrons from the special offer feature. It was a shitshow in November when we had more than a hundred eligible people missing from the exported list. So this time we're doing it manually and we will be making a snapshot on Feb 28th.

v0.7.17

Is currently in Beta and available here - ➡️https://rift.ink/4gMpwDq

Cait returns to her normal (but you may see her don her goth outfit for some special events in the future!) self, you get to grope Blair and make Lyriel show her tongue.

The Early Access version should be out soon, Friday if we don't run into any major bugs. Could be delayed until Mon/Tue if there are some. And it will have the first expansion of the Alchemy Minigame!

We'll start by adding three potions, two of those will have more or less the same effect as the ones in the Lost and Found event, and one completely new potion. Then we'll keep adding recipes and effects, and some will be coming with special animations, as voted by you.

Gameplay Polls

Speaking of your votes. We've had three major polls this year already. Let's go over those.

First one was the poll about Minigames ➡️https://rift.ink/3Qq3xXX

The "Make alchemy repeatable, add more like it, and go all out" option won by a lot. So we're doing just that. Alchemy is first, then I believe I already showed you an early prototype for the closet search minigame. We'll pick it up again soon-ish, but we might do a detour to a simpler minigame before that. I'll talk about it when we get to it.

The second major poll was about Small Actions ➡️https://rift.ink/3Qq3yet

The "More and bigger! Up to and including sex quickies and the like" option won by even larger margin in this one. We haven't got to the "sex quickies" part yet, but we're already up to eight of the girls' occupations covered by Actions, and we have another batch ready to go in the future updates. We're almost certainly going to make Actions 2.0 with more apparent progression, more options and better balance. And there's going to be a sex poll specifically for the Actions sex quickies soon!

The third major poll was about Cinematic Sex Scene Animations ➡️https://rift.ink/3Qq3yuZ

This one was a bit confusing. The winning option is "More long animations, add some to the House girls", but it's not really a clear winner, with a few other options getting at least half as much votes each. What's more, almost all of the comments were against the idea of going hard (heh) on the cinematic animations. One thing was clear, most everyone wants animated endings for the sex scene, so we're going to do our best to provide. Other than that, we'll see how it goes.

Thoughts and another Important Poll

Quite a few of the comments you left on the gameplay polls mentioned the impact of the new features on the story progress in one way or another. And here's the funny thing. Making more minigames and actions and animations may actually improve our story pacing and progress. Let me explain.

As we get further into the girls' personal stories, we're digging ever deeper into their backstories and we have to take them to new places, meet new (to us) people and engage in spirited activities. Same goes for the main story. That means that we have to make new environments, design (or in some cases redesign) new characters, create props, and generally spend quite a bit of time on making sure it all fits.

Case in point - the The Heist. The whole story arc was originally scheduled to be completed in August, September at the latest. We had to make a huge new environment, lots of props and characters: the Hidden Archive itself, the elevator room with all the puzzles, the corridors surrounding it, the student guards, the overly friendly plant, and a lot more. We had to design and code all the puzzles. We had to write 25000 (I just checked) words for all the interactions and dialogues.

And we kinda did it all, but while we were doing it all we had to put out the monthly updates as well. So we had to write those, we had to make new renders, sometimes we needed new environments and props even for the semi-filler scenes. And yeah, I'll be honest, sometimes we do add some scenes just to pad out the update. We still try to make those scenes as fun as we can, but still. Anyway, in the end we had to delay the The Heist event until December.

So why am I talking about it now? The thing is, we could have done it way earlier if we could skip even a single update and concentrate on finishing the big quest. The unfortunate thing is, I'm not sure we can risk starting skipping the updates now even if it would lead to better story progress overall. We've been doing monthly updates for almost six years now, and we're seeing subscription dips even when there is a release if it's not a very exciting one. We have a whole team now that depends on the Patreon income, so, yeah...

Here's where the minigames and actions come in. You seem to like them , and if you folks are fine with it, we could alternate between releasing a story update and an update consisting only of a minigame update, a few action sets and a sex scene, for example. That way we won't have to pad out the storylines and make filler-ish content, and in turn, this will allow us to plan ahead better. That said,  we really need to know if you're actually going to be okay with that.

So please vote in the poll below, it'll really help us define our priorities. I'll make the poll multi-choice once again, so mark all the options you are okay with.

Regardless of the poll outcome we'll have some cool story content for you in the 0.7.18!

I'll talk about it in the next dev update, hopefully before it goes to Alpha.

Goodies

Oh, and we have a little goodie for you - Cait having a protein-rich breakfast.

Comments

I prefer the story updates but id rather wait for a big story update with lots of effort put into it than something small or rushed. I'm good with waiting and not getting regular updates as long as the time it takes to release is reflected by the quality and amount of content. That being said the mini games and small non story scenes are nice to have as well.

Bread

The main game/quest code has never really been a problem for us. It's more about the interplay of all the quests and storylines, and that's just one example of why we need more time between story updates.

Zanith

I feel like I should explain my comment a bit-- the usual situation is as skills improve, character count grows, and storylines get more complex the devs want to do "fewer but bigger" releases. The part they don't factor in is that the difficulty of debugging a change is largely driven by code interactions, not simply lines of code; so it is proportional to the _square_ of the code delta, meaning twice as much change is going to be four times as much debugging. You hit a point of diminishing returns pretty quickly unless you are writing extraordinarily clean code. (Plus, of course, in the case of some personality types, looser deadlines leads to procrastination but I think your track record rules out that situation here). If what you're doing is simply substituting one sort of content for another but keeping the same release cadence then you likely _will_ buck this trend.

Dubsington

I believe in you man!

Dubsington

Well, the first option specifically includes sex

Zanith

We'll try to buckle the trend, I guess

Zanith

I sub for lore, story and lewds, mini games do nothing for me.

Siren13

Every game eventually gets to the point where the dev wants to update less often, and the fans always vote for it, and it always goes badly. :-/

Dubsington

Hiya! As for me, I'm quite irregular. Meaning I've been supporting you from pretty much the beggining but at very random rates and tiers! I'll always be more of a 'sexy times first, everything else second' person but I happen to really dig the story/interactions,- or I wouldn't be there anyway! Rae is the best written character in AVN. As others said it you never leave us quite in the dark so I'm already grateful for this.

Kojack

Your choice sounds to me like the "even if there's no content for a whole month" if you don't really care about monthly game updates. In any case, noted, thank you!

Zanith

I recently upgraded for the special offer archive and alpha access and whether I keep the upgraded tier or go back to my old one depends on my financial situation moving forward regardless of the content. Either way, I've been supporting for a while, and I'm planning to continue doing so regardless of whether we get content every month or not. Quality over Quantity is what I'm after, so if it takes longer between releases, I don't mind as long as the quality continues as it has been, or is improved even more. Regular updates (even if they're just announcements on discord or patreon posts) are definitely a good idea though so we can stay informed about what's going on.

Mike

I too don't feel any of the options quite fits my view. I guess my choice would be more story than side stuff. I'm not that fussed about the 'every month' bit, but I do care that the stories progress.

BlackPhi

a wise relative of mine once said "trust is earned" and you have more than earned it.

Anthony Docimo

That’s fair, I know I’ve been subbed for several years now and I think this is literally my first time posting at all anywhere despite being on here and in the discord. It’s much less a reflection of all of you and more that I wanted to support without trying to dilute the creation process with my opinions and requests. But if there’s a problem and I see it or think it’s critical enough to respond having somewhere I could do it without feeling intrusive would help, and I imagine it’s the same for other people subbing that care about the game. Also just a (hopefully) streamlined way for people who do want to be more hands on or vocal to submit feedback and ideas as well.

Eligor Abigor

To somewhat echo what it looks like many are saying, I'm fine with whatever direction is taken as long as communication on it is clear - and to be fair, you've all been fantastic with communication thus far, so I've got no worries there. I remember there being a post a while ago about maybe having a stability update, and part of the reason I'm all for it (on top of it being a very sensible idea) is that it was communicated clearly.

Torthirik

Mini games are good fillers and fun That would be a good compromise for me truthfully speaking

Kees Beets

Indeed that would be a very good compromise

Kees Beets

Yeah, Special Offers are our way to make Friend and Resident tiers somewhat more rewarding cause our Alpha/Beta builds sometime run quite thin. In any case, thank you for your support! We're very thankful to all of you folks who are happy to keep supporting the development regardless of the release schedule

Zanith

In theory, yes. In practice, most of them don't wear gloves at all or only wear them on some occasions, so imma be honest, it's not likely that everyone will get such scene.

Zanith

I can only thank you for your trust in us! And yeah, I'm seeing this echoed in lots of comments, and now I think you may be right about "notifications as content". I should've worded the options a bit better. Maybe I'll run another poll in the next dev update, to clarify the meaning of "content" for all of you folks.

Zanith

Well said! Trying my best to communicate as often as possible, but not gonna lie, sometimes I just put off writing the dev updates because there's so much going on and I want to include this and that and something else. I should probably try to get back to shorter dev ups and just write about stuff as it is.

Zanith

Totally fair! But here's the thing. We're super thankful to folks like you who are supporting the project because you like it. And true, some folks only subscribe once in a while, like you do for other projects. But there's quite a few of the folks who keep their subscription, but only do so while the content flows. Actually, we can already see it from the poll. That's the kind of info that we need.

Zanith

Hmm, fair enough. We kinda tried to bring down the number of channels on the server to make it less confusing, but a suggestion channel might still be a good idea. The thing with polls is, the vast majority of people who pledge, even on higher tiers, are not going to bother with comments, much less with a whole-ass discussion. As I mentioned in the post, the poll result for the cinematics was very different from the comments under the post.

Zanith

Me personally, I'll stick to Neighbor until I can't afford to support anyone anymore. I upgrade to Friend to take advantage of the special offers (which y'all do frustratingly often, so I'm stuck on what feels like a constant swap lol) but it's gonna take some serious problems in my life before I drop my sub completely (full disclosure, that may be more probable than not with current events in mind 😒)

Sh0tgun_Jacks0n

Could we get some handjob and possibly blowjob options for all the girls in gloves?

Jonathan Keith

(for me, a notification counts as content)

Anthony Docimo

imho, so long as we get a heads-up, some sort of info about whats happening, thats perfectly good - if the info says there will be a month or month-and-a-half extra wait, then thats fine, no mini-game or anything needed.

Anthony Docimo

Idea was just that—a dedicated feedback channel or forum in the discord and/or patreon. Discussion in my brain at least means “talk about stuff I enjoy” not critique or complaints. I know I actually hate patreon personally too so unless I see an update I don’t go out of my way to check it because I’d rather support without thinking of the middle man. I think polls (in general) are either guesswork or inefficient when problems are nuanced though hence why I think a more open format could help. Best of luck on whatever is decided going forward though.

Eligor Abigor

I just want some kind of update. I dont care if its content, minigames or purely story. Im even fine with waiting a month or potentially longer, as long as you guys keep up the clear communication. As long as you guys are straight forwards and tell us "hey this is what we're planning for the next update, but its gonna take a bit longer" im totally fine with that. Just dont go radio silent

Jasper of the Dawn

I personally will stay subscribed even if there is a long content drought since I really like this project and want it to succeed, but for *most* patreons I subscribe to I only do so for a month for the newest version, then I don't check for updates for a year in order to bing again. Polls will miss people like that, so bear it in mind

Aelanar Brightfield

Any and all feedback is very valuable! As for the dedicated feedback channel, I honestly don't know what we can add. There is a discussion channel on Discord and there are comments here. I try to run polls whenever we consider a major change. If you have any ideas, gimmie!

Zanith

Completely understandable, and I always ask folks to take care of themselves and theirs first and foremost. At the same time, I know that quite a few people just have a leisure budget, but they do juggle it around depending on the content and the like.

Zanith

That's what I'm personally thinking as well. Some gameplay and some rewards while the team takes a bit more time to cook the bigger story event.

Zanith

None of these options are quite the right fit for me so while I can’t speak for everyone I’m an advocate of quality over quantity. If you all NEED to take more than a month for quality I’m cool with that just being communicated so I’m not wondering where the hell an update is because muh expectations. I have more I could say but don’t want to write an essay—however, unless I’m blind there isn’t a feedback thing anywhere. Maybe direct feedback from subs could help and give people a chance to voice gripes and/or concern BEFORE they’ve already unsubbed (with the understanding that not all feedback will be constructive, helpful, or even remotely kind). I hope this was of even a little value.

Eligor Abigor

Whether or not I stay subscribed has more to do with my financial situation then whether or not you release something in a given month. I really enjoy the game and want to support it if I can.

Klutz Lament

I just like seeing an update every month. I think things like the minigames are a good compromise to the bigger story things. I feel like the minigames would give you more to do with "less" content, if that makes sense.
