I think the hater phenomenon is the result of many things. Personally, I never understand why people would waste their precious time actively being a hater. Why waste the hours? But I feel the main issue with the attention economy is the shift from art / media to "content". Before the digitization of all media, you had to spend money on a record, a CD, DVD, movie ticket, book, etc. so the economics of being a hater / anti don't make sense. Media scholars often say, “The medium is the message,” and because the internet is the main medium where people engage with “content” it places an artificial sameness of media. When everything is a swipe or a click away, it makes it so easy to be a hater. When media had more value as a product you actively sought out hating in spaces where people wanted to come together to enjoy something, didn’t make any sense. This devaluing and reduction of all media on the same level, fed via algorithm (also AI) gobs and gobs of “content”—it doesn't matter what's being consumed. Like, I've been thinking, imagine if we replaced all "content" online with static or dummy text, but people still scrolled, swiped, and watched - does the substance of the "content" matter? When there’s so little invested, and all media has been reduced to just “content” - “why not troll?”, “why not start flame wars?” - it's all the same. To your point, it is so easy to be a hater; it is much harder to be a builder. But also, I think on the level of just consumption, so many people because of social media have become (lazy) passive rather than active consumers. When you actively cultivate a library, you develop a taste for what you do and do not like. The social media algorithms have atrophied or never developed the ability to cultivate. But to find out what you like, or develop taste, requires an open mind, and sadly, there are few to be found today—or at least on social media. For example, Star Trek came back 10 years ago and that amount of just toxic chud energy from the mainstream Star Trek community is nauseating and personally off-putting. So many people are so quick to hate ANY new Star Trek because they “automatically” know it’s going to be bad, which is so dumb! This hater mentality closes people's brains off, but also this negativity brings views, which leads to engagement, which leads to money. I just think if people redirected their energy into making their own art, or hell, cultivating their own media libraries, people would spend more time on things they enjoyed. Anyway, sorry if this comment is long, rambly or stream of conscious-ish, these are just my immediate reactions to the podcasts! Really thought provoking

Another great episode! The social engineering part at the end reminded me of the new Twitter location feature and the revelation that some MAGA accounts or accounts of those claiming to be Palestinians in Gaza were actually based in India, Russia and Nigeria lol smh
