Reading is my one true love when it comes to art, so I’ll randomly connect things to books, lol. Someone said they felt that the problem with art now is dishonesty with self. I wonder if there is a dishonesty/disconnect with art because so many treat artists like sports teams- they are only meant to go head-to-head with another artist and score big on charts- the art is irrelevant. There is a dishonesty to liking an artist only to spite/stan another artist. Is there a lack of personalness to how many experience and evaluate art? This is probably very internet-the way I am thinking about this because a big part of this is based on how people online talk about art- but it feels like so much art stuff is group think. If you see art as something that you connect personally with, not necessarily as a group, there is a disconnect when everything is about charts/popularity. How can you expect to have xyz things when it comes to art if you only connect to art through algorithms, charts, popularity, and nothing personal? Where is the personal curation when it comes to the art you are trying to connect to? There is a dissonance to enjoying so many things that I know will never chart while listening to people complain about where the real art is while they are only looking at the popular art. I wonder on the artist end what the disconnect/emptiness that we are feeling is. Is there at least a bit of dishonesty or at least disconnecting when your only goal as an artist is chasing charts? Then again, some artists can artistically play with creating hits while for others it does not work. For me, I cannot have as many conversations through the years about the flaws in things like charts/awards then put so much stock in them. After a while you do not give stock to these entities when their taste is not aligned with your taste. I do like seeing what certain awards and such just for the community aspect that comes from it though. I like seeing the conversations and debates on what should’ve/shouldn’t been on the list. Some art does not need to represent the times. As a science fiction fan that recently read a few dystopias this year some art needs to be forward thinking. We do not need art that is just copy & paste what is happening now like its contemporary (I know there is a message of we currently live in a dystopia which can work but throw in a bit more critique or something). I do not want art to get pigeonholed into just representing now. Some artists are not artistically leaning towards creating this type of art. Is that what is always required in art? Is that what we the people always need in art? Do we lose something by expecting art to always be current or relevant to us? There are so many ways to represent the times too. I also get what people mean it does feel like there are so many things being put out that feel disconnected/empty. Especially in certain spaces it seems like we are getting more art but its so dry. I’ve complained about dryness/emptiness in the past but that can feel empty to me too. At this point I am apathetic instead of angry when it comes to these works that do not connect. The thing that helps me is connecting even more with art that has a pulse. People are not wrong for commenting on the disconnect/hollowness because it is so weird. I just do not want the conversation to override the fact that there are still great art/artists out in the world. I do not like that the conversation ends with art is dead or something like that full stop.
