Ok. I got it. In short. Mechanics are the primary language of video games. Those who don't communicate succinctly through them (risk, reward, dependence, struggle, connection, ability etc..) can run the risk of losing their audience. (if its too samey or not fun.) It is kinda funny how before the rise of indie, many studioes understood that. Well, guess that's what happens when games copy aspects of internationally popular ones instead of really asking what they want to communicate, and how best to communicate it in play.
