Mah friends, first of all, thank you for your encouraging comments on the last post regarding the off-center barn doors! I can now sleep much better! 😊
Doors aside, the roof is done! In fact, almost everything is done except a few small things - doorknobs, hinges and the last remaining window. Then it's off to the painting booth!
To my delight, the 3D printed roof tiles are pretty good and fit together like they should. I don't know exactly how many are there, but I had to print about 8 batches of 130 tiles and I ended up with a few dozen leftovers.
These are held in place with superglue, and after they were all laid down, the overhanging tiles above the invisible wall were cut off with a rotary tool and sanded flush with said wall. After this was all done, I made some simplified protruding timbers underneath. I guess it's easier to put them only where they'll be visible instead of the entire roof.
That one finished window is made from balsa strips, nothing extraordinary there, but the "void" behind it is done in an interesting way. I've seen this trick countless times and I had to try it out. So the pink foam skeleton - that's still there. But I've cut it with a knife, using the window frame as a guide, and then gouged it out with pliers. I ended up with a deep hole which I painted with black primer, and once the building is painted and I add fake glass, given it will be properly weathered with dust streaks, the result should be pretty convincing. Both window frames will be removable to make this possible.
As for the remaining details, I'll make the hinges either from plastic or copper sheets. Some handles and doorknobs from wires.... and that will be it I guess!
