It's Ten of the Clock, Do YOU Know Where Your Wife Is?

After such a long break due to illness, it's actually kind of...nice? to get back into writing. Weird.

Anyway, here is a scene that was missing, which leads into what is genuinely the Most Awkward Scene I've ever had to write, thanks SO MUCH ROSAMUND. That one's still in progress, but this one is fun enough that I thought you might enjoy it. :)

‘It’s ten of the clock, do you know where your wife is?’ Robin demanded, and Leo jumped.

Leo was used to Robin appearing in unexpected places, but he had entered the Rose Room’s solar with uncanny stealth. Leo, who had been absorbed in one of the accounting ledgers that lined the bottom of the bookshelf, hadn’t even heard him.

Leo shrugged.

Robin crossed the room and glowered down at Leo, who waited to see if anything else was forthcoming. Robin said nothing further, so Leo returned to the ledger.

‘Why don’t you know where she is?’

‘Why would I know where she is?’ Leo countered, turning a page.

The ledger was flipped shut with a decisive thump. Leo looked up.

‘Because you won,’ Robin said, exasperated. ‘The pair of you, with a little help from yours truly, of course,’ he added without a trace of modesty, ‘have made it very difficult for Baron Mabry to move against you without starting an open revolt. You won. You should be turning cartwheels!’

‘We won,’ Leo pointed out, trying to keep his voice even, ‘on the anniversary of her husband’s murder. If she wants to be alone, I’m not going to bother her.’

‘Right attitude, wrong conclusion, my young friend,’ Robin replied, throwing himself into the chair beside Leo’s and clamping an arm around his friend’s shoulder. ‘Have I ever shared my Three Rules of Marriage with you?’

‘No.’

Robin tutted. ‘Clearly, I’m slipping. Now, pay attention. Rule One: work out if there is a problem. If there isn’t, everything is fabulous, sunshine and roses, gambolling lambs and frolicking puppies and all that sort of thing. If there is a problem, we move to Rule Two: work out what the problem is.’ He wagged the finger of his free hand at Leo. ‘Important to find out what needs fixing before starting to fix it. Then we move to Rule Three: fix the problem. So: what’s the problem, and can you fix it?’

Leo shrugged Robin’s arm off his shoulder, irritable. ‘Why do you think there’s a problem?’

Robin rolled his eyes, exasperated. ‘Because you’re looking at accounting ledgers and arguing with me instead of being with your wife.’

‘You could leave,’ Leo suggested flatly. Robin gave him a look that was half sympathy, half pity, and Leo felt his temper rise. ‘The problem, as you put it, is that she’s sad that her husband was murdered. I can’t bring Hugo back, therefore the problem is not solvable. Stop meddling.’

Robin sighed. ‘If she wants to be alone, and she might, she’s an odd duck, then you should give her the opportunity to say so. If she doesn’t want to be alone, she’ll have wandered off and isolated herself anyway because she doesn’t want to bother anyone. Honestly, the pair of you are as bad as each other.’

‘I assumed she’d be staying with the children.’

‘Why? Ellie’s room is perfectly nice, and I no longer need to keep tactfully out of sight, so you can bet I’m not going to pass up a night with my wife. Rosamund should be here, with you, and she’s not. Aren’t you even slightly concerned?’

Leo, correctly anticipating that he would get no peace until Robin left, stood up and stretched. ‘Where do you think she is?’

‘No idea,’ Robin replied, apparently content that it was no longer his problem. ‘But she won’t have gone far.’

I'm really enjoyiong it. My tiny tales mostly consist of observing and trying to keep up, I certainly don't think I could chat with them, I think they'd evaporate!

MOIRA

Thanks! It was supposed to go, ‘No. It’s not the same. But it’s not important right now. Please, just let the man fix my hair in peace.’ ‘But—‘ 'Leave me alone, Caroline.' I have now fixed it :D

Jill Bearup

thoroughly enjoying the tale so far. In Chapter 6, in the paragraph begining ""Maybe you're just realising that it's nice to be cared for?" Caroline offered." at the end of that paragraph Rosamund says .... "But tjtaLet the man fix my hair in peace." I hope you don't mind me pointing it out

MOIRA

He would have. I don't think you'd let a character get away with being shallow.

Marei Nagy

Ok, it may be because of your recent short video but I first read "I'm slipping" as "I'm simping" and it weirdly fit as well XD

Michael

In a lot of European places, church bells ring every hour to tell the time. I thought it was like that.

Heike

Oh, so it’s not morning then….

Liz C

In the most recent draft, Leo has summoned Caroline because Rosamund is in such a state. Not even Robin thought to do that, apparently Captain Collins has hidden depths!

Jill Bearup

You can definitely claim credit if you want to though 🔔

Jill Bearup

As someone who has read enough Age of Sail related fanfic to correctly pronounce “forecastle” (if not to understand how the bells work) I’m not sure I can lay the blame for this one on you 😁

Jill Bearup

Thank you. While “You’re as bad as [Proper Name] is common, “You’re as bad as each other,” isn’t as common as “You two deserve each other.”

Having the Hawkhurst Manor guards sound the time by bells is in my fanfic :D so it might be my fault? (I couldn't decide on a system of horology for the Fantasy Heroine world, Caroline has been noticeably unspecific on the topic, and so I adopted the "bells" system from the Age of Sail.)

Dave Sheddi

I can't speak for your local dialect, but "as bad as each other" is a widely-used phrase in British English. In my expreience it's popularly deployed by parents when their children are squabbling about something inconsequential.

Dave Sheddi

I really enjoyed this Jill, thank you. It's amusing to know that the characters are getting away from you as they did Caroline!

Leonard Richard Stanway

As Rosamund aptly pointed out, Caroline's haphazardly constructed world is not representative of a historical time or place. I knew exactly what was intended.

Leonard Richard Stanway

In the current draft, Leo straight-up SUMMONS her in the next scene because he's so worried about Rosamund. Was not expecting this. Not even Robin has had the audacity to summon Caroline on purpose. :D

Jill Bearup

Now that I think about it, I wonder if I got it from Discworld…

Jill Bearup

I never knew that the bells thing was about ships! I learned a new thing today. The reference is to a TV advert in the 80s that went along the lines of, “It’s ten o’clock, do YOU know where your children are?” (So I guess it would be “it’s ten of the clock, do YOU know where your Rosy is?”

Jill Bearup

I just hope Rosamund hasn't ruined another dress and they don't have more mouths I mean prisoners to feed.

Fenrir Wolfganger

Thanks. Due to unhistorical comedies I thought City watchmen actually called out the Eight Bells and All's Well etc but as you pointed out it was a nautical expression instead. Of course we know the USA expression she's referencing. I come for the humour, I stay for the education.

Fenrir Wolfganger

Unless, of course, this is not Earth and time is expressed differently, "it's ten bells" is either hyperbole or pretentious--bells referring to time occur only on ships and there are only eight bells per watch, each bell being 1/2 hour. (on land, time has been referred to as "of the clock" since before the 14th Century, abbreviated to o'clock, or expressed as "the tenth hour") Ten o'clock at night would be the 4th bell of the 1st watch.

Otter Annason

Oh, this is so nice. Leo and Rosamund are definitely award. How is Caroline feeling aboth this whole thing?

Ana (Lariaenl)

Aww, Robin. Gotta love a man who unabashedly loves his wife.

Tessa

EXACTLY!!!

Ann Brookens

I loved it, though I hope Rosamund didn't get herself kidnapped in the mean time.

Bleeb90

Ah. Leo *assumed*. I've spotted a chunk of the root cause right there.

Aguido Horatio Davis

As bad as each other sounds like awkward phrasing to me. Is that the American in me, is it something specific about Robin’s speaking style I haven’t grasped yet?
