So... it's time to start another base 😁

I've put the foam cutter to good use today, and working with it was just amazing. I started by sketching the basic base dimensions on paper and then I cut the base according to that - so no more "working with what I had", this one was tailor-made 😆I decided to keep the terrain profile simple, just a small hole on one side and I made the road slightly off-camber to make it more interesting, but not too evident. All easily done with the hot wire!

Then I followed some techniques from the FAQ Diorama book... I rolled the air drying clay into a thin "pancake" which I glued to he foam with white glue. Then I made numerous track marks in the road with those Crusader tracks I kept and also some basic wheel marks with a paintbrush, nothing sophisticated. At this point I also dry-fitted the two barrels which are removable but they'll fit nicely into the terrain. There will be wooden road signs inserted into them, as was common in Africa 😊Ref pics included.

And then of course a layer of diluted glue and sprinkling of sand and gravel, also some authentic sand, this time not from Tunisia, but Petra, Jordan, because it had more suitable grain 😁

Now the base needs to rest for the white glue to dry thoroughly. Then I'll probably make some more adjustments with more stones and sand and of course I'll focus on the signage, so filling the seams on barrels, stuffing them with rocks and making the poles and signs from styrene.
