We're starting a Science Paper Book Club 🤓

Science papers can be hard to read, but it's a lot easier (and more fun) when we do it together! We'll gather from noon-1 EST on the first Monday of each month to decipher and discuss a research paper. Our first meeting will be on January 6 and we'll send the meeting link a day in advance.

What's the paper?

This month we'll dive into some social science that asks: "who is susceptible to online misinformation?" They found that age, political party, and analytical thinking ability are the main factors influencing whether Americans can identify which news headlines are true or false. We've attached the paper and its supplement to this post.

Do I have to read it?

Nope! Feel free to come having read all or none of the paper. It will be useful to review the abstract, the discussion section of the paper, or some media coverage if you want to bring any questions or comments. No experience required.

Who can access this perk?

We're inviting Howtown Heroes, Counselors, and Mayors to join us live in conversation. The recordings will be available to Citizens the following day. Anyone else can continue the discussion in our Discord server. To mark the occasion, we're offering a 25% membership discount for the Hero tier when you sign up for the year. Use the code B50C2 to redeem it.

Why are you doing this?

Sometimes the best way to understand something complex is through conversation. Science is for everyone, but it isn't always written in a way that's accessible to everyone. We can close that gap together.

Can I suggest the next paper?

Yes! Please join our Discord or send us a message on Patreon if you'd like to suggest a paper. They should be "Open Access" or "Creative Commons" papers where the full text is freely available online.
