Chapter 1793: Yuan Gui backout

Chapter 1793: Yuan Gui backout

As Shu Yu walked toward the center of the village, she noticed the village chief of Hedeng Village being supported as he approached her.

She hurried forward a few steps and extended a hand to help the village chief, "You don't need to be so formal, Village Chief. I've come to see Grandma Fang."

The old village chief was quite advanced in age, but he walked steadily with the support of a cane, appearing to be in good spirits.

"Excessive courtesy isn't a problem. Since Lady Lu is here, why not come to my home for some tea? I'll have someone inform the Fang family."

"No need, I can go on my own."

The old village chief nodded, "Alright, then. I'll accompany Lady Lu."

Initially, Shu Yu had planned to exchange some polite words, but she then realized that Grandma Fang had lived in this village for thirty years. Curious about how she had been living all this time, she decided to walk slowly alongside the old village chief and gather some insights.

The old village chief was curious about Shu Yu's visit and also felt a bit anxious.

After a few steps, he couldn't help but ask, "Lady Lu, may I inquire why you're looking for Aunt Fang? I heard from Yuan Gui that they've been working at the county office these past few days, so there shouldn't have been any issues. They are, after all, honest and straightforward people..."

As the old village chief rambled on, he consistently defended Grandma Fang in his words. This warmed Shu Yu's heart, and she smiled, saying, "I just have a personal matter to ask Grandma Fang about. I know she's doing well."

The old village chief relaxed upon hearing this. They hadn't walked far when someone came rushing over.

This person appeared to be around Shu Yu's age, his face flushed with anger. He dashed over to the old village chief and blurted out, "Village Chief, Yuan Gui doesn't want to acknowledge Grandma Fang anymore. He's reneging."

The old village chief was taken aback, then he frantically signaled to his grandson by his side, urging him to be quiet.

The young man only noticed Shu Yu, blocked from his view by the wall next to the old village chief. Instantly, his expression changed, but he had already said what he needed to say.

Clearly vexed, he introduced himself to Shu Yu, "This is my grandson. He's impulsive. Please don't mind, Lady Lu."

Shu Yu smiled and was about to reply when she caught wind of the topic of conversation.

"What do you mean Yuan Gui doesn't want to acknowledge Grandma Fang anymore? What's going on?"

The village chief's grandson stuttered and tried to find an excuse, but he was worried about making things worse.

Sighing, the old village chief explained, "Considering Lady Lu knows something about Grandma Fang's situation, she has been alone for many years. Recently, she and Yuan Gui have been getting along well. Both of them don't have any relatives left. So, before they went to the county town, someone suggested that they acknowledge each other as kin. That way, they can take care of each other in the future. Both of them were willing, but who could have known that just when they were about to do it, Grandma Fang fell ill and went to the county town. She only returned yesterday."

Now that she was back, the plan to acknowledge their kinship was back on track.

Having a good relationship with Grandma Fang, the old village chief had delegated the arrangements for acknowledging the kinship to his own grandson.

But listening to this now, it seemed like something had gone wrong.

The old village chief looked at his grandson, his gaze asking, "Why did Yuan Gui suddenly change his mind? Did something happen? Did he say anything?"

The grandson huffed, "Who knows what's going on in his head? I think he's got himself a job at the county office, and he believes he's got a promising future now. He doesn't want to take care of Grandma Fang anymore. He even came up with an excuse, saying maybe Grandma Fang still has relatives alive. Grandfather, you should hear what he's been saying!"
