Shu Yu stood outside the grocery store for a long time but didn't see a single customer entering.
Even though Chenggu County had recently experienced a major disaster, there still should have been some people coming and going. It wasn't likely that not a single person had visited the store for so long.
It seemed that the business of this Chen Family grocery store was indeed not doing well.
Shu Yu looked at Ying Xi, "Go inside and inquire."
"Alright, Miss." Ying Xi rubbed her hands together and quickly entered the shop, pretending to be a customer looking to buy something.
The shop assistant immediately perked up, his attitude becoming enthusiastic as he greeted Ying Xi.
Shu Yu stood under the eaves outside, head lowered, occasionally kicking at a stone as she waited in silence.
It didn't take long for Ying Xi to return, not carrying any items in her hands. She rushed to Shu Yu's side and whispered, "Miss, I inquired, but the assistant doesn't know where Chen Bing's in-laws in the prefectural city are. He's new here, having arrived just a little over two months ago."
Chen Bing's relationship with his in-laws had grown distant, and he rarely mentioned them. He only went to the city about once a year.
"Oh?" Shu Yu raised an eyebrow, "The assistant has only been here for two months? That's a short time. What about the previous assistant?"
Ying Xi grinned, "The previous assistant was fired. I heard it was because he had connections with the young lady of the household."
The term "connections" held a subtle meaning, and they both knew what it implied.
Shu Yu finally understood why Chen Bing insisted on going to the city to find a husband for his daughter. Despite their strained relationship with the in-laws, he still boldly made the trip.
Ying Xi sighed, "I intended to inquire more thoroughly, but the assistant suddenly realized I was trying to trick information out of him and refused to say more. By the way, Chen Bing's explanation for going to the city is that his in-laws are old and unwell, and they're going to pay their respects."
That was why he had taken his whole family to the city.
Shu Yu chuckled, realizing that Chen Bing was always calculating, no matter the circumstances. Even his father-in-law's illness could be used as a pretext. This trip not only enhanced his reputation but could also help him find a husband for his daughter. Who knew, he might even gain some inheritance from his father-in-law.
"Let's go, let's head back."
Shu Yu cast one last glance at the grocery store and then went straight back to the Meng Family Escort Agency.
She took out a partially written letter and added the news about finding her Grand Aunt.
Worried that her grandmother would be concerned, she didn't include the details of her Grand Aunt's past. She simply wrote that she had found the person, but the Grand Aunt had believed that her family had perished in the flood all those years ago. That's why she hadn't returned home for so many years.
Since Shu Yu had her own matters to attend to here, and it would be a short time before she could return, she could only wait until the New Year before bringing her aunt-in-law back home to reunite with her grandmother.
After finishing the letter, the next day Shu Yu went to the post station to have it sent.
Coincidentally, news about the incidents in Chenggu County had spread rapidly throughout the country in recent times.
Her letter would likely catch a ride on the wave of news and quickly reach her grandmother's hands.
With the letter sent, Shu Yu breathed a sigh of relief. Then, with Ying Xi, she headed back to Hedeng Village.
Compared to the previous day, Hedeng Village was livelier. At least, more people were moving about the village.
Upon seeing Shu Yu, some recognized her, but nobody approached her. They had learned about Shu Yu's identity from Aunt Fang and Yuan Gui the previous day. Common folks were quite afraid of offending people with status.
So, they merely observed her curiously, and the more perceptive ones went to find the village head.
