Suddenly, Shu Yu recalled that Yuan Gui had mentioned being saved by Grandma Fang after falling off a cliff. He had been tended to by the village doctor and hadn't come to the county for treatment.
It seemed that the village doctor in Hedeng Village was indeed extraordinary.
Shu Yu took a deep breath and asked, "What about Chen Bing?"
Guan Granny said, "Bad people often seem to escape the consequences. After he married, he had two children, a boy and a girl. He used the money he obtained at the cost of Sister Fang's life to have a contented family. But he wasn't cut out for running a shop. Over the years, I've observed that he had ups and downs, but didn't achieve anything significant."
Chen Bing had ambitions, but his abilities didn't match. He lacked vision too.
He had even considered other businesses in the past, but they all led to losses.
Years ago, it seemed he owed quite a sum of money. Eventually, he sought help from his in-laws to cover the debt.
But since then, Chen Bing and his in-laws didn't interact much.
Shu Yu sneered, "If he had foresight, he wouldn't have abandoned his lawful wife and ruined his own path."
If he had treated Grandma Fang well in the past, hadn't gone repeatedly to the girl's uncle's shop asking for money, and had worked hard and sincerely, even relying on that connection, he wouldn't be in this sorry state after thirty-odd years.
Grandma Guan agreed, to a certain extent.
"Where does Chen Bing live now?" Shu Yu asked.
Grandma Guan hesitated, noticing the tightness of Shu Yu's lips. She asked in a low voice, "Miss, do you want to find Chen Bing... to help Sister Fang get revenge? Unfortunately, your timing isn't great. I heard he left the city and went to his in-laws' place in the city a day before bandits invaded Chenggu County."
Due to Grandma Fang connection, Grandma Guan often paid attention to the Chen family. Although not extremely knowledgeable about Chen Bing's whereabouts, she would remember what she heard.
"He went to the prefectural city?"
"Yes, Chen Bing and his wife have a daughter who's reached marriageable age. Despite looking around the county town, they couldn't find a suitable match and their daughter was growing older. So, they mustered the nerve to approach his father-in-law and are trying to find a match for her in the city."
Chen Bing and Grandma Lu were of the same generation. Logically speaking, their grandchildren should be around Shu Yu's age.
However, Chen Bing and Grandma Guan spent their first two years of marriage escaping disaster and then divorcing. This delay meant they didn't have children initially.
It was only a year later that they were re-engaged, and another year after that until they were officially married.
However, they continued to have no children for several years. It took seven or eight years before they finally had a son. This son was actually a year younger than Lu Sanzhu.
Many more years passed before they had a second daughter who was now fifteen and would turn sixteen this year.
Shu Yu furrowed her brows. With Chen Bing in the city, he would be difficult to find. Especially now, when the city was chaotic, Grandma Guan didn't know the address of Chen Bing's in-laws.
"Miss, Miss?" Grandma Guan saw Shu Yu's silence and felt a bit uneasy.
Shu Yu snapped out of her thoughts, smiled at her, and said, "I've roughly understood everything about Grandma Fang. Thank you, Grandma Guan. It's getting late, so I'll take my leave."
Shu Yu stood up, and Grandma Guan quickly rose as well.
As she watched Shu Yu leave, she couldn't hold back her curiosity and asked anxiously, "Miss, are you really just fellow villagers with Sister Fang?"
Shu Yu halted in her tracks, surprised by Guan Granny's perceptiveness.
She smiled, didn't directly answer the question, and simply said, "I'll visit another day to express my gratitude for your care of her back then."
