I think some people forget that not all millennials aren't so young anymore. Nor do all millenniels like trolling or are humorless. Plenty of us grew up in a time where vintage movies were popular. I mean you'd think people would realize some millennials are 40 now and not a part of the TikTok generation...

2023-04-29 11:17:07 +0000 UTCI didn't say they didn't "understand" 30's Screwball, on the contrary: The current generation can't fathom humor that isn't trolling or Internet, so when they get a dose of the crazy vintage stuff, it's like desert natives tasting root beer for the first time. Unfortunately, those same folks think only what they've discovered exists (maybe they came across Arsenic in drama club), and no one ever nudges them toward the Marx Brothers, or WC Fields, or anything else they missed out on. And the movie's joke about Einstein turning Jonathan into Boris Karloff was an in-joke in the original Broadway play, where Jonathan really WAS played by Karloff. Unfortunately, the real thing wasn't available, but Raymond Massey was an effective substitute.

You get a lot of physical slapstick and nonsense dialog mixed with subtle reference jokes (which made more sense to people of the era) It is hard to translate to contemporary tastes. As a sidenote: Dr. Einstein was played by one of the most famous sinister villains of his day, Peter Lorre. He parodied his character style in several films, including this one.

2023-04-29 04:29:53 +0000 UTCA humorless Millennial-Z generation discovered 30βs Screwball Comedy by accident, and now believe that Arsenic and Bringing Up Baby were the βonlyβ two comedies ever made in the B&W days. Ohh, if they only knew. π An alternate theory for why every single Reactor on the Verse is jury-dutied to watch both is that we have a new generation of fangirls crushing on Cary Grant for the first time, and thinking it was their own idea.
