INTO THE WOODS DISCUSSION

Am I the only one that feels this movie could of been special if it wasn't for the below par (besides AGONY!!!!! HAHAHA) and over used signing numbers. It was a bit all over the place. I swear it could of been an absolute 10/10 if it wasn't for this.

As someone who grew up in a family that loves musicals, I think you are 💯. We were raised on West Side Story, Singing in the Rain, The King and I, Grease, Wizard of Oz, Sound of Music, The Music Man, Pirates of Penzance, and so many more. It seems like there was always an old musical on TV somewhere. Additionally we had a community theater that put on at least 2 shows a year; a musical and a play, and our parents took us to them as soon as we were old enough to sit in a seat and behave, lol. Even Shakespeare when I was 10. For shows like that my mom would tell me what the story was about before the show so it was easier for me to understand. It's a shame that stage theater is almost something of the past. People are missing out by not being exposed to some of the most clever entertainment ever written. Plus, some of my most cherished memories are of the performances I was a part of. Some of these masterpieces have transitioned well to the big screen; Twelve Angry Men, A Streetcar Named Desire, A Raisin in the Sun, Six Degrees of Separation, On Golden Pond, and more. (I could go on for 10 more pages about musicals or plays. LOL). But I often wonder if younger generations even realize that these were shows created for the stage. I apologize that this became so long. But I so agree with what you said I had to vent. Now I sound like the old lady complaining about "kids these days." I certainly don't mean to. I just think it's a shame that they don't have exposure to live theater like it used to be.

Sondheim has a distinctive style that not all people enjoy. As with most artists, he strived to develop a unique voice. In his case, he often employs edgy rhythms, harmonics and clever, if sometimes challenging lyrics. I understand the many criticisms this film has received, but it does contain some worthwhile moments and messages.

"This is my point. Listen to my review. As a movie it was 'MEH' but as a live performance it would be awesome." Well, we'll agree on that point, the movie was "Meh", and the linked video of the live stage version was better, but at least their movie didn't mess up the adaptation like The Producers, The Phantom of the Opera, or (ick!) Cats's movies did. I just thought you were either complaining about Sondheim's music (or I'd put "music" in quotation marks for Sunday in the Park With George), or that you didn't know it was going to be a musical. Hence the comment about viewers today who don't see too many of them and don't know what to expect.

Eric Janssen

I understand. It is one of your fav films. You are defending it. I do the same with mine.

Aussie Dillon

I'm sorry if I upset you at all I really do love your content and the fact that you give everything a chance. Just this time it felt like if there was better understanding of the history it wouldn't have been put down so badly. I am sorry 😔

Jacquelynn Mobley

But for me as a watcher who adors both and respects both couldn't finish your vid because of how many times you keep saying through out the vid how bad it was it just breaks my heart. Also when you have some spare time watch the behind the scenes of the movie see how much the actors put into it. If you think it's meh the it's meh but I don't know don't say it every 5min but hey I know you going to do you. And I love the fact that you watch everything.

Jacquelynn Mobley

This is my point. Listen to my review. As a movie it was "MEH" but as a live performance it would be awesome.

Aussie Dillon

It's originally a live performance that's my point it's a film adaptation of a Broadway musical so it probably didn't translate well

Jacquelynn Mobley

I also have a choice if I want to watch a movie or not, even if requested. I watch everything.

Aussie Dillon

Your not and I never said too it's just really hard to watch when I know that most likely the reason you are giving the results you are is because you don't understand the history or it's origin and maybe if you had a better understanding you would have gone in with a different perspective. The synopsis was missleading.

Jacquelynn Mobley

I loved the fact they had different fairy tales in one movie, but as a movie, it was bad. Live Performance would be amazing!

Aussie Dillon

But the movie was average. I even stated it.

Aussie Dillon

When you are putting it down 10 min in because you don't understand what musical theatre is then that doesn't seem like an open mind. Just because you sit through it doesn't mean you are open and receptive to it. You didn't have the history to his show and I understand that's how you do things to keep your reactions more authentic but in some cases it can do more injustice then not. This is one of them.

Jacquelynn Mobley

Exactly. I am supposed to be fake and like every film with a smile on my face.

Aussie Dillon

wtf is this comment. Hahaha. Listen Miss Jackson, I watched My Little Pony. Shows my opened mind

Aussie Dillon

And it was a filmed stage performance, not an adaptation.

JIM SCHMITZ

A more modern music style musical where one of it's main goals was to bring people back to love musical theatre. Don't know if I'll count that one.

Jacquelynn Mobley

Btw, Dillon loved "Hamilton".

JIM SCHMITZ

The problem is also the one that plagued the 2007 movie of Sweeney Todd, when that went to theaters: Between 1983’s “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”, and 2002’s “Chicago”, rights problems made it almost impossible to get the movie adaptation of a Broadway musical onscreen, and an entire generation didn’t have ANY for almost twenty years. (Except for 1986’s “Little Shop of Horrors”, and just count the fan recommendations for “Oh, you have to watch Little Shop, it’s the best musical ever made in movie history!” from kids who’d never seen another one in their lives. 😛) As a result, we got the running joke of Millennials believing “Musicals? Why would people sing in public, that’s weird!” (not realizing that musicals take place in the own abstract space), and studios promoted movies like Sweeney, Into the Woods and the West Side Story remake by showing only the drama scenes, and kids who went to see the movies said “Wait, why is Johnny Depp SINGING in a horror film?” If they’d grown up in a generation that still had original Broadway musicals, and not corporate stage pageants of Frozen and Shrek, they might know why.

Eric Janssen

I couldn't watch your vid on this because of how you keep putting down by not understanding that it's a movies adaptation of a Broadway musical. No it didn't translate 100% but it did really well compared to others. Musical theatre is only singing. If you don't like it and like musicals where there is drama in-between numbers please stick to that it hurts the good shows like Wicked, Hamilton, Spamalot, Phantom that are mainly song. So much for having that open mind. In this case you needed to do more research. Acting is more than just verbal words and performance.

Jacquelynn Mobley

Welcome to the music of Stephen Sondheim: He’s done famous Broadway musicals—and Into the Woods is probably his most singable—but he mostly uses complicated sung dialogue to an intellectual IDEA for an onstage musical, in this case Bruno Bettelheim’s darker psychological interpretation of fairy tales. The music’s also actually musical in Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd” (although the Johnny Depp movie cuts out Sondheim’s best known title tune), but it’s still not exactly The Sound of Music.

Eric Janssen

Will "Beloved" be out later today, because if not, I'd like to be refunded my "All About You" membership fee.

Ryan Moore

The movie is a badly bowdlerized version of the wonderful stage musical, which is available to view here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqCsQCsinK4

Ryan Moore

You should know that the original musical is sometimes even more ambiguous then the movie as far as the lyrics and stage directions are concerned. Nevertheless, it is a classic. We once performed it with our school Theater. 😆 But yes as a movie it seems a bit long and monotone

Caroline

I mean, it was adapted from a Broadway musical. So the music is kind of the biggest part.
