I am not a sports guy, but there is a lot I find interesting about the logistics and engineering of Formula One Racing. One of the most impressive facts, in my opinion, is that the top teams can perform a regular pit stop, with a fill up and a change of tires, in two seconds. The pit stops are like a separate sport. There should be a show where each pit stop in a Grand Prix is compared, analyzed, and in the end, a trophy would go to the team with the fastest stop of the race. I don’t know what the trophy would look like, but the award ceremony would just be the pit crew captain running onto the stage, stopping on a dime, being handed the trophy, getting a glass of Champagne thrown into their open mouth, then sprinting off again.
I think the techniques developed in the F1 pits could revolutionize healthcare. The way I envision it, you would come in for a checkup, and be shown into an examination room where a team of professionals, basically everyone you see who has “ist” at the end of their title, is waiting. You would stagger out a minute later, looking confused and feeling violated, with a sugar cookie and a box of apple juice clutched in your trembling hands. It would be profoundly disturbing, but on the plus side, the rest of your afternoon would be free!
