How to Criticize Something Fairly

I enjoyed Godzilla x Kong, but that doesn’t mean I thought it was perfect. Indeed, I found some of its flaws genuinely enjoyable.

For instance, the human characters. The primary team was a scientist, a veterinarian (more on him in a moment), a conspiracy theorist, and someone who could communicate via sign language with one monster, and had a psychic link to another.  They were all there for the sole purpose of explaining things to each other, and the audience. It was like watching the greatest exposition fighting force ever assembled.

Now, about the vet. I enjoy Dan Stevens as a performer. You’re welcome to have a character who is a brilliant doctor (for animals in this case.) You want to give the character a laid back, joke-around attitude? Fine. You decide to have the doctor wear a Hawaiian shirt . . . okay, that’s not a particularly creative choice, but I’ll go with you on it.

But they named the character, “Trapper.” I’m sorry. Did they consider Hawkeye and BJ, but decide they were too well remembered? That’s not an homage, it’s a lack of effort. I kept expecting him to mention a doctor he doesn’t like named Burns.
