The gates opening and forming one giant gate never was a vision of Will. What you were talking about the Mind Flayer being on the top of Hawkins at the end of season 2 wasn't a vision, he was on the top of the Upside Down Hawkins. That's Nancy that had a vision of thoses gates opening at the beginning of episode 8, a vision that Vecna gave her to "deliver a message to Eleven", remember ?

In the meantime, I'd like to recommend a Netflix series two seasons long that would fill the gap: "Sense8". It's worth it just for the cinematography alone, but the acting and plot twists and, above all, editing will hook you fast.
