The reason why so little was explained about the aliens and whatnot was because the story placed the viewers in the shoes of a normal civilian family just trying to stay alive. There was no talking to the aliens, and all the really juicy intel was probably kept in the hands of the military and the government. If aliens really did invade like this, then most people wouldn't know all the details.

But yes, Orson Welles knew what he was doing, in that he made HG Wells' invasion sound like a radio news event, to poke at the US staying out of WWII, despite shaky insecurity that real invasion news might be coming over the Atlantic any minute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crPGFZiFjfs

2022-05-07 04:10:24 +0000 UTCThis production did stretch credulity a bit. The immunity issue that saved Earth was always hard to swallow. A race that was that advanced before humans existed would have taken over way before we got here and built up their own immunity or developed protection. An earlier film did a more convincing, easier to understand, job. Interesting side story: a famous American actor did a radio version in 1938 and caused a minor panic when many listeners believed it was actually happening.
