How Fetterman Won (w/ Joe Calvello)

This is episode is a little different. Listeners know that Matt and Sam have been following John Fetterman's run for the U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania from the start, doing their first episode about his campaign after his primary win in May. In light of his victory over Dr. Oz earlier this week in the general election, they talked to the Fetterman campaign's Director of Communications, Joe Calvello, for a behind-the-scenes look at how they did it. Topics discussed: Fetterman's strategy of defining Oz early (and, yes, the origins of some of Fetterman's most popular Twitter dunks), left populism, crime, abortion, why voters have a right to be angry, and how the campaign responded to Fetterman's stroke and turned his very public recovery into one more argument about why he'd fight for Pennsylvanians.

It’s great that Fetterman’s authenticity can overcome people’s burning hatred of social democracy.

If it works in Pennsylvania it might work in North Dakota.

If Fetterman can cut through that he is a god.

For the people I encounter in my work-a-day life the belief that “people don’t want to work” burns with the fire of a thousand suns. I hear it over and over and over again. This extreme hostility towards the welfare state and social democracy is why so many people vote Republican.

In light of language about offshoring and globalization is international labor solidarity possible?

You guys alerted me early that Fetterman was the shit, and the entire election season I was rooting for him and so fucking impressed. Can't wait to see what he does.

Dude: Calvello's f-bombs! Love it!

I remember this summer you guys were apologizing for putting out new eps slowly, but now you guys are on an absolute tear. It's great and each episode is still so engaging. (I still love the slower-pace deep dives though, never give those up!) Congrats to the Fetterman campaign!
