New York Blog #23 - Holiday Traditions

Traditions can be a good thing. Someone once told me that it’s important to have traditions because they are the certainties that we can expect in a world of uncertainty.

The holidays are coming up and I wanted to share some of my New York holiday traditions that I do every year.

Mulled Cider at a Holiday Village

I used to spend Thanksgivings with family in Chicago. Our tradition was to get mulled wine at Daley Plaza at the Christkindlmarket the day after Thanksgiving. I don’t get the chance to go to Chicago anymore, so I try to find time to get some mulled wine at one of the holiday villages in Manhattan. There are plenty to choose from. I try to go to a different village each year.

Holiday Tree

Holiday trees are sold on street corners of New York from Thanksgiving week all the way through Christmas. The day after Thanksgiving, I like to walk down the block and pick out a (small) tree. Other people in the neighborhood are doing the same thing so this tradition makes it even merrier.

Skating at Bryant Park

I have skates. So might as well use them since it’s free to skate at Bryant Park.

Hosting a Party

My first roommate in New York loved hosting. So we would host a holiday party every year where we would fit 50 people in our two-bedroom railroad-style apartment. Even after moving out, the tradition stuck. Although when living in New York, it’s a bit of a competition to get people to attend your event between other holiday parties, company events, shows, and travel.

What are you holiday traditions? I’d love to know what you like to do during the holiday season.
