Nov2024/2025 Patreon Billing update:

I'm sure everyone is seeing some variant or another of this message around the block now, so I'll try to keep this simple~ Patreon has been wanting to swap over to a pay when you subscribed model Vs. a Pay on the first of the month model for a very long time coming now, and they're using the iOS debacle as a means to force this update through. They are however giving us the courtesy of about a year and a half to sort it out on our ends. (Nov 2024 is the soft rollout, Nov 2025 is the hard rollout.) Patreon's Announcement: https://news.patreon.com/articles/understanding-apple-requirements-for-patreon?utm_campaign=240812-IAP-SB-1stoftheMonth&utm_medium=email&utm_source=iterable

On our end of things: Currently, things aren't 100% and I don't imagine they will be till this actually rolls out on November 2024/2025, but the working model for it is as such:

If you're subbed now, you don't need to do anything. Your sub date is and will remain the 1st of the month, rewards roll out the 4th of the month as always for you and everything is good.

If you sub on a day after the 4th, you will not receive your files till your sub day. This means if you subbed on the 20th, regardless of the files going up on the 4th, you will not have them in your library till the 20th.

This incentivizes people to sub before the 4th to keep things close to how they are, and I'll have to update the welcome notes and tier descriptions to reflect this change.
And if you can help it, come Nov 2024th if you're re-subbing, don't use the iOS Patreon app to do it, as it'll charge you an additional 30% for your sub.
Please just use a desktop for that.

Now, I'll be holding on to the legacy billing structure till Nov2025 so this won't really impact things for a while, but Patreon informed us, so now I'm letting you all know so you're all informed as well. As this becomes more relevant I'll be posting updates and such as they come.

This better not be retroactive, because I don't even know which of my subs were made on iOS, and which were done on my desktop. All I know is I've done a lot on both, and I've used my phone to snipe a fair number of limited seat subs. Those subs would have been more expensive than the unlimited ones if the fee were included, so this basically removes the primary use case for me on iOS. A sudden, surprise 30% fee on half my subs or more could also financially ruin me. What is that 30% even paying for? The situation is made objectively worse for all parties when they force their way into the middle like this.

This makes things unnecessarily difficult. I prefer having my subs all post at the same time because it makes it easier to see what I'm spending on them. I can't help but think that Patreon knows this change obscures that information. Wouldn't be so bad if they didn't make it such a pain in the ass to change the date a sub bills on. If you're trying to move it earlier in the month, you have to unsub, skip a month of membership, and then sub on the intended day. If you don't have at least a 30-day pay-gap when you resub, they'll keep your billing date the same as it was before you canceled.

Guess Iโ€™ll have to do that sometime to be safe cause I fully expect them to just jack up the price without telling me.

I'm actually not sure on that one. If they're gonna be scummy about it (and I feeeeel like they would be), then I imagine you'd continue to be charged the higher amount if you set it up on the iOS Patreon App. But if you were to un-sub and then re-sub on a desktop and not the iOS app, you wouldn't get hit with that additional 30% charge.

Is there a way to tell which Patreon subs have been started via iOS? Or does this only matter when starting a membership after the switch and wonโ€™t raise existing membership prices? Thanks for the heads up! I guess that explains why items in peopleโ€™s Patreon shops are more expensive on my phone than on desktop.

pretty much guys!

Apple had to find a way to pay for the switch to standard UBS-C ports on their phones.
