How I make hair wefts!
Added 2025-04-28 20:26:55 +0000 UTCHere's a quick little step by step of how I make hair wefts!
I will use: yarn, scissors, a hair straightener, wire cat brush, mod podge, paint brushes, and a silicone mat on a board
Humble beginnings: I cut a bunch of yarn to a decent length, knowing it will be folded over- this is about 8-9 inch lengths of thick acrylic yarn. Remember that the fibers in yarn are only so long, trying to use super long cuts for super long hair is futile!!
In this picture, I'm also unraveling the yarn to make it easier to brush out. This is optional, but I like to think it helps with breakage. Each bundle of unraveled yarn is 2 lengths worth.
I take each bundle, and knot it around a dowel, in half
I do one pass with a hair straightener BEFORE brushing, makes it a bit smoother.
Then I go to town on it with a cat brush, hitting it with the straightener as needed!
Here's the wefts brushed out...
And here's what I brushed out of them! But don't worry about this going to waste, I use it to stuff my doll bodies (I've never had to use polyfil on them!)
(Switching color here) Now I cut the yarn from the knot
But before I glue it down, I brush out the edge I'm about to glue- this takes out any short, loose fibers that end up getting into my mod podge, and also fans out the edge, making it super easy to make an even weft
I pour some mod podge in a little bowl, add a little water, and go in with a decopage brush, pasting about 1/3 of an inch of the weft down to a silicone mat. Repeat repeat repeat.
After it's dry, peel the wefts right off the silicone
...then trim the glued area down!
And that's that!
