Greetings from the South Pole!! Good ol' science fiction, it's always better when the science is more plausible. I have watched some Yellowstone documentaries, and that event is believed to be extinction level over time. I agree, the vfx were great. That was my top reason to see it in theaters. Though they did press credibility with all the last-second escapes.

You kept saying they didn't tell us what caused this. They actually did. Well the crazy guy on the mountain did. The sun will emit extreme amounts of radiation. Known to scientists as Coronal Mass Ejection or CME. AKA solar flare. Which happens on regular bases and is felt as magnet storms on earth. Not 100% sure the results would be what we had here if it did. Then again everything might be possible with a very very big one!?! I would even request a documentary video that can explain much better then me what such thing is, but it doesn't make for that good of a reaction. Plus it would be the same as you watching movies about Yellowstone. I got similar worries from thinking about both. Thus like you I tried not to think of these things I can't change.
PS: Around 2008 I also learned about the Mayan calendar thing. Even if I didn't believe it much. That didn't stop me to from being worried about watching this movie when it first came out. Took me a while before I got the guts to do so.
