So about the last few seasons. I will write some background information that wont spoil anything. The writer George RR Martin planned for a 7 book series. So far he completed 5, and writing the 6th one for like 10 years... The Show is like: - season1 = book 1 - season 2 = book 2 - season 3 = book 3 - season 4 = book 3 - season 5 = book 4&5 + additional stuff the show runners invented or changed - season 6 = partly book 4&5 but it goes past them - so a lot of inveted stuff - season 7 = mostly inveted stuff which were supposedly based on the guidlines George RR Marting gave them - season 8 = all of it was written by the showrunners supposedly based on the guidlines George RR Marting gave them Mind there is a big emphasis on supposedly. There is no way to verify that, since Martin is very secretive about HIS ending. Seasons 1-4 are regarded as the best seasons. Season 5-6 have a mixed reputation and season 7 and especially 8 are the ones which get most of the criticism. In short the showrunners run out of source material and invented (sometimes drasticly changed from book 4&5) stuff, and a lot of fans didnt like that. In the end its up to you to make an opinion if you get as far as season 7 and 8.
